1 Brit commited to a psych ward, 1 to go.
I, by the way, would fully support subscriptions and would be more than happy to pay a reasonable fee for use of this site- especially if went back to the learning environment it once was.

KCzaja,
Its still a learning environment when someone posts a real question. There will always be this jibber jabber we see now unless a moderator starts deleting posts of lesser means. I dont want to see that. Its the kind of control that would ruin the site for me. Do you think paying to subscribe would keep out the riff raff? I dont. Look whos posting and you will see a group of regulars who besides learning are having fun. Thats a good thing.
With all due respect for the database and Oli, its always about the money, not that I think moneys a bad thing, I think its the root of everything evil ...LOL seriously !!
If I was to pay for access I would expect much more security involving pedigree's and who gets to alter them. I would also expect some perks like discounted advertising. Maybe even a web page on the server like yahoo, geocities, angelfire, and so on.
As far as moderators, all I think is in order is removing posts that are damaging to an individuals reputation, or the truly hateful stuff that I've seen involving religion and ethnicity.
Anyway I'm just expressing my opinion and its ultimately up to the sites owners and the money.
Money always calls the shots.
Brent.

Agree Two Moons, I remember Oli saying the income generated from the various ads on the site paid for the server costs. This new charge will be profit, and if that's the way it goes then that of course is Oli's choice and if people choose to pay, they do so too.

I don't like PayPal either. Too many cases of identity theft and false charges. Whenever, I make online purchases, I charge to my VISA card rather than use PayPal.

I cant stand Pay Pal I got into a 6 months battle over me refunding a lady her deposit back and they paid her and i paid her and they billed me back and told me i owed them the money..I finally after 6 months of paperwork after phone calls for days and weeks on end... I spammed them and told them if I ever caught them near my bank account ..I would own them....They are nonsense and cant get things straight on your money...try getting it back if they make the error. on their end.....not possible...
No pay pal for me either...and I wont pay or subscribe for any usage on this site...I will just not be a part of it....
The only free thing left , almost for any of us to do is our opinion.....I pay thru the nose like all do and the electric bill , the computor internet bill and phone bill and satelite are over my head now.... I dont think Oli will do the subscribe thing....
That would be a lot of bookkeeping and lose a lot of readers and users of the people who advertise here.....JMO

Dear Oli,
I would be happy to pay a fee and subscribe, I think this site is certainly worth it.
by triodegirl on 07 February 2008 - 16:02
So what if Oli makes a few bucks on this site? His time has to be worth something. I just don't like the idea of "special treatment" for those that buy a subscription. Everyone should be treated the same. Period.
How about sponsorships? I've had a mailing list for about a dozen years now and anyone who makes a yearly donation gets to be listed as a sponsor of the list. They don't get any "special treatment" but are recognized on a special page for their support.

by Oli on 07 February 2008 - 17:02
I understand all concerns. But of course do I want to get something for my work. As it is, this website is not a money drain. but then again, I do not count my personal hours.
For a donation/supporter/subscription basis, I would not change any guarantee of the pedigrees or such. For 100% guarantees, you need to deal with the kennel club (FCI, AKC, SV, etc..)
Perhaps those that make the most of this website are those that use the classifieds. Every single classified in this website, it will rank nr1 in Google for the text put into the title. Thats a pretty good service if you ask me, (thats my SEO skills at work),
Most dog names will rank nr1 in google also. So if you register your dog here and potential puppy buyers will look up the parents . there is a 90% likelyhood that they will end here since the names will end up in rank1.
as I said before, I wont change anything about the current behavior. whats free will be free. I will simply be doing some other stuff just for those that decide to subscribe and since no one is forced to subscribe, no one is hurt.
I have had this website online for pedigrees and classifieds since 2003,. Its been free for use from day 1, and will continue to be so. But whats wrong with wanting to geta a return on 1000's of hours of (unpaid) work? ( I think its about 5000 hours now that I've but into the website)
:)
