Please consider some of the sugestions that have been made . I hope your females hips are ok.. and pass... I will tell you that we have a 12 year old GSD who has Sever hip dysplasia at 1 year old and we were going to do a replacement or FHO when he showed signs of pain. He is 12 NO signs of pain... stilll runs and jumps in and out of our truck. I paied a lot of money for him so it hurt me a lot. It was also sad because hi breeder was small and only had 2 dogs and could not make good on her contract.

It would make you very resposable to sell these puppies on limited reg to insure that some one elce does not make this mistake and then you can be part of the solution and not the problem. As many people do not know how important it is to X-ray and OFA cert at 24 months... Make sure that your female is 8 weeks past weaning pups to x-ray her. And you may want to spay neuter the pup you are keeping. I say this because your female has a nice pedigree and if you wanted to breed her again to a male with a pedigree that matchs up people might be interested in the pups for work. Your male has some (no name American lines) and most people who are looking for a working dog would not be interested in american lines. If the pedigree is right. And son to mother breeding would not be good..

Unfortunately I've seen some what I'm sure is "untrues" on here.  Luckily I know enough, that it raises a red flag.

ullie-Another thing to consider  is that anyone who breeds a litter is now a breeder like it or not.. But if you breed make sure you are always responsible for the puppies that you put on this eather that means that have a contract when you sell pups and if the owners ever dont want them anymore that they have to bring the pup back to you. Keep them from shelters...

I can tell you of a sad story i have right now Pure bred female shep lived with pure black lab male she got preg  and theyadumped them both at a shelter. My friend called me very upset and one was crying because they were going to put her to sleep puppies and all... We took her out and she had her puppies 13 unwanted mixed puppies becasue now put a contract for spay neuter and becasue no one had a return policy. This could have been avoided if you ask me. But I think to my self what if this was one of my puppies who was preg in a shelter aboout to die...

And this is why i have a puppy contract. For anyone who wants to read it , it can be found on my website. It is not perfect but i does make  the Back yard breeders go away.. And it also make me get them back if they cant or dont want to care for them anymore...

Unfortunately no, I don't know of any good meds to suppress that bitch gene.  We just can't help it sometimes.  And yes I do think that someone was educated today....

No problem.

I think i will pay a large sum for the maker of such a pill for the bitch gene... I am trying to be helpful and educate others nicely.. As i did 8 years of reserch before breeding a litter and it took us 6 years to put togeter the program we have.  I might just need to sit back and be quiet like i normaly do. As I hardly ever post anything.

Ullie's Mom. I know you must feel a bit unwelcomed at his point, don't let them get to you. You will not destroy the German Shepherd as a breed with your one litter. If you mandate spay/neuter for this litter it will have very little impact at all. That said, you did take an awful risk breeding with so little information. As has been memtioned, you have a PRELIM, not an OFA certificate. At 12 months this is not written in stone. Sometimes the position is bad, some vets do not sedate the dogs to do the x-rays, poor quality films, the list is endless. I do rather think that you have missed your window of opportunity as old as he is now... the same goes for the bitch. I remember many years ago, one of the self appointed breed police here said that schutzhund dogs didn't need to be OFA'd, they would not be able to do schutzhund if they were dysplastic, so take heart, everybody has to learn somewhere. (And some people never do.) Next time, get your answers before you breed and you may find people here a bit more supportive. The question most people ask first is "What does this dog have to offer?" Just because a dog can breed does not mean that it should breed. The reason people are so dedicated to titles is that it shows a degree of ability, not always a reliable indicator if the title is obtained at a "midnight trial" but it is, at least, a starting point. Show ratings and breed surveys indicate that a person qualified to rate breed type feels that the animal is a good representitive of the breed. Most of us feel that our beloved pets are sterling examples of dogdom and that they possess all the cardinal virtues, but love can be blind and/or too forgiving. A breed judge is (ideally) an impartial opinion. Next you should ask, will my dog pass these sterling qualities to his/ her offspring. Know that there are no absolutes, but a close study of what the dog has behind it, what it's siblings have done and passed on will give you a good clue. Your male has some very impressive dogs behind him, the thing to look at, (and well read puppy buyers will be) is what has the next generation done to carry the legacy on? No titles? Why not? These are just a few things to think about... Lorri
