Hopefully Oli is just tweaking it. I was just popping some corn.

There clearly was something amiss last night when Oli posted the IP addresses. Whether he did that manually or what only he knows, but he has already taken them down. I think they do not help solve the issues here and suggest they not be shown on posts. Better yet to use real names, or at least have people register and pay to use this site. Some of the crap that goes on would quickly stop if one was paying.
There are what are called "static" IP addresses and others called "dynamic" IP addresses. The latter can change depending on the setup. Many of us will only have one, but some would have several depending on the time they logged on and their own internet pathway. If one has more than one computer, it will be different as well. And then there are firms that allow one to send emails to them and they scramble everything. So the tool becomes worthless unless one MUST track the person, as in some sort of law enforcement situation.
An IP address is on every transmission you send, whether it is an email or just logging onto the internet. So yes, if someone has the right tools and sophistication, or subscribes to various services, one can find anyone's information from IP addresses and eventually find you. In worst case scenarios, hacking could occur and this is one reason why there are things like firewalls, virus software etc. But people do not bother to use them or use them incorrectly.
The answer to the serious problems of harassment on this site come from the same few people all the time. These are the people who should be kicked off. A team of moderators, from different parts of the country and perhaps even the world should be able to deal with this. Other boards run relatively smoothly once such is in effect, however in the past the problem was that the moderators all knew each other and had a similar agenda. One could even effect a rule that moderators could not post to certain controversial type topics. In any case, without some sort of better moderation, this degenerates into a boys locker room humor, harassment, posting of porn photos, changing pedigree information etc. Sadly, adults are not adults able to take their enmity for someone elsewhere. If some better way cannot be found to deal with the forum, it should be dropped. There are plenty of other sites where people can go to discuss training, pedigrees, health issues etc.

The problems on this board are those "Trolls" who use Proxy services and Anonymizers and post under many different aliases - then cry foul when they are called out. IP addresses mean nothing at all to those people who can change IP addresses per identity, and do it easily. Myself, I have always been "just" eichenluft.

I'm with you Mi GSD, popcorn is called for.
I missed my chance to play detective but it reads like a couple of people ran the same comparisons I would of done. Always thought that a lot of the bashing could be traced back to one or two sources.
How very sad and pathetic.

So, if I send an email, with the right software and/or the right connections, the recipient can identify my IP number and use it to post messages that appear to be generated by me?
by VHDOOSEK9 on 09 January 2008 - 17:01
I have posted only as vhdoosek9 or SVDECOY and have always signed my name.
And as Shasta said I do like to take credit for what I say be it right or wrong :)
This IP thing is a bit confusing to me.

Well, I printed out some of threads with the IP addresses. Really makes for some interesting reading. They just may come in handy later.

a couple of things about IP addresses (im not a computer guru, but i know a couple of things)
1-your computer has its own
2- your internet service provider has many
3- yours can and will change unless you request a static IP addy from your ISP
it is possible for 2 different people to log on from different computers, and still show similiar if not identical IPs. normally this can occur if you have the same isp.
the number that was by my name was not the ip addy for my computer, but more than likely the one my isp sent out when i sent my information out.
