I'm going to guess why I think their contract had a stipulation that didn't allow Ellen to give the dog away.
If that wasn't in there, then people could buy rescue dogs and turn around and sell them to companies that do research and experiments. Also they could buy dogs and resell them for a profit.
My guess is they make you fill out paperwork, do a check on you to see if in their opinion you would make a suitable owner. If this is true then they have the dog's future welfare as their main interest.
I'm mot picking sides, just trying to make sense of the contract stipulation.

Ninja181--i get your point, and in some ways that makes sense, but in this situation it doesnt....they said they took the dog because the girls were under 14, they do not allow dogs to go to people with kids under 14......thats really crazy to me because thats when most people get a family pet, when their kids are young so they can grow up with the dog.....what 10 and 11 year old girls would sell a dog for research? the point to me is--this was probably the best home that this dog would ever have had, so therefor they are full of crap when they say they want whats best for dog....i think they are just pissed because they could no longer brag that a celeb own one of 'their' dogs, this was also a good way for them to get publicity, but it backfired....

Also, BTW- Ellen went out of her way to say that "I screwed up; I should have read the whole contract & I didn't. I'm the one who made the mistake, fine me or whatever, but don't punish those two little girls or that puppy! It wasn't their fault, it was my fault, I screwed up!" She said that repeatedly, she was aware that she made the mistake, and was willing to try to make up for it, but asked that the girls and the puppy, who had formed a bond, not be 'punished'.JMHO, but what kind of a ball breaker do you have to be to take out your control issues on little children and puppies! Sorry, it should have been re-evaluated. I think the rescue lady needs a shrink! And a new job! ( and probably a lawyer, too) jo

So does Ellen get to choose what contracts she honors and which she disregards. This rescue has a policy that is part of the contract. IMHO sometimes this can be a good policy. The meat of the matter is she broke a contract, she caused the heart ache. The rescue did what was proper and right. I`ll bet between their policies, home checks both pre and post adoption they have a successful adoption history.
Nobody had their arm twisted to adopt from them.

"The rescue did what was proper and right?" I sure don't think so. I think it was heartless and cruel to both the dog and the kids. Ellen may be in the wrong but do 2 wrongs make a right?

THANK YOU 4- PACK!!!.... says it all right there!!!--- do 2 wrongs make a right?
plain and simple...should innocent CHILDREN who has nothing to do with a contract, knows NOTHING about a contract, have their hearts broken because someone wants to make a point? NO, NO, NO, NO!someone said that ellen thinks she can do this because she is a celeb...i think thats backwards, i think these people are making this a big deal because she is a celeb....if it was anyone else they prob would have said nothing...they are useing her big name to try and give themselves a big name...at $600 a pop for a rescue dog? DUH! there is money involved! they are breaking kids hearts to make a buck...well they screwed up, it seems there are more people against this than for it....I say screw a damn contract that breaks kids hearts and rip a dog from a forever loving home....

Geez if only issues like this could be resolved with common sense what a better place this world would be.

"most rescue are no more than a rescue mill"
Most? How many rescue organizations have you been affiliated with? To say 'most' you must have visited with nearly all of the rescue organizations across the country to say such an ignorant thing.
I am very much involved with rescue and while I do agree that there are some crazy people that are involved w/ rescue that do go overboard, there ARE normal people out there that DO have the animals best interest in mind despite what many of you are saying. I think it is very sad that there is such negativity against rescue groups in this post. The rescue group is NOT at fault here. Our contract also states that if the dog doesn't work out, it is to be returned to us-period. We pour our hearts and souls into these dogs, providing them medical treatment that can add up to ALOT of money on top of just providing simple love and care when no one else wanted them at the shelters. You can bet your @ss I'd be knocking on the door to get the dog back if need be and just like this group did, I would give the 2nd family first dibs at filling out the adoption contract to adopt the dog. While I also think it is extreme to not adopt small dogs to homes with children under 14, that is the policy of the group and maybe Ellen will actually read the contract before signing next time.
Had this been Joe Blow off the street that this happened to and not a celebrity, we would not even know about it.

kutzo- Do you have children? If you do, then how would you feel if you had to explain to them why their dog they adored was gone? If you don't, then you just will never understand the whole point of the argument.
We're not saying Ellen (whom as an entertainer I am NOT her biggest fan) btw, didn't use poor judgement BUT what was the big friggin deal really?? It's not like she dropped the dog off on a crackheads door step and said "would you like a little dog that hates cats?"
Yes there's breeders on this board with contracts that stipulate if a dog doesn't work out for whatever reason they are the first to be notified- I'm not a breeder BUT if I were I don't think I'd have a problem with someone saying "the dog didn't work out after several attempts to acclimate it with my family or other animals so I had a friend with 2 children that adore the dog and are taking excellent care of him". Would I investigate a little further to the truth of the story? Of course I would but if it were exactly the way the person told me I would never take it upon myself to seize the dog. For what reason? What purpose does it solve? None. Just means I have to now search for yet another home for the dog that is acceptable and take the chance that the dog won't be cared for as well as if I would have just left it with the 2nd owner.
Sorry, I have a heart and I have children-I'd never be able to live with myself if I were that rescue lady.
