Zigzag, the long coat gene is inherited as a simple recessive gene meaning both parents must carry it. If your dog is a longcoat and if he's bred to a stockhair that does not carry the longcoat gene, there will be no longcoats. If bred to a stockcoated carrier of the longcoat gene, you will most likely get coated puppies if it's a decent sized litter. If there are only a few puppies, there might not be any longcoats (or they might all be longcoats), it all depends on the way the genes pair up at the time of conception. If you breed a coat to a coat, all the puppies will genetically be coats and every dog out of a coated parent will be a carrier. If you're not sure if your dog is a coat or if it carries the gene, cheek swab it and send it to the lab that tests for the longcoat gene. This test will not tell you if your dog is a plush or a standard longcoat, that is determined by the modifying genes. It will only tell you if your dog is genetically a coat or if it is genetically a stockcoated carrier. Others here have done that and they can give you all the information you need to do that. If there is any doubt that the longcoat gene is a simple recessive, there's an easy way to prove it....breed 2 longocats together and you should get 100% genetic longcoats. Some might be plushes, some standard coats, but they all will test positive for the gene and for being carriers.

Correction to above: breed 2 longcoats together and you should get 100% genetic longcoats. Some might be plushes, some standard LONG coats.......... Sorry.

LOL was just about to give you a hard time about that Blitz! Anyway, I agree with triode girl on this one. I see dogs placing high in shows who can barely walk around the ring and some really great ones sitting on the sidelines because they have a little extra fuzz. As I said before....ridiculous.

Just hang in there, Poppa. I'll give you another chance before long LOL.

Well as time goes by I'm gonna say yes he is a long coat. And the thing is when i purchased him the breeder assured me not longhair. Was alittle curious about the hair behind his ears at the time but she said not to worry just puppy fuzz. She was a very pleasent person to talk to answered my questions and lots of patience. But I'm wondering if she knew he was longcoat seeing she has been breeding shepherds.or maybe she didnt know. The thing is she knew i didnt want longcoat.Ok now a couple days ago something clicked so had to go back and read these responds.Well one of the comments on here was from her.Not gonna mention who.But i figured she would get ahold of me lol.Oh and i found out she commented because just seen an ad that she has another litter.I guess what I'm getting at is if i sold someone a pup and found out down the road not what they wanted.I would see if anyway could correct it.But maybe thats just me.Ok I'm done venting

Well ZIGZAG... were having the same dilemma here... keeping our fingers crossed and hoping the fuzz in the back of the ears go away... It MAY GO AWAY...

My pups lost their fuzzies after 6 months after (the ears took around 5 months to go up completely (thanks to JELLO and Vit.C) already on their 7th month... the NECK hair really is thick and gotten straight... now im working on back region trying to keep the coat thin  due to hot summer months...

I'm thinking... the collagen of gelatin and Vit.C may help the MODIFYING GENES as BLITZEN have mentioned it ... it helped the ears go firm... and I hope it will make also the guard hairs go firm since both the ear cartilage and hair is made up of COLLAGEN...

Nothing wrong with a little experiment and knowledge being tried... hoping we hear from the the BREEDING  AUTHORITIES...

I really wish Frau Dorsen be a PROPONENT to bring the  two sides of the GSD spectrum together again...

Have a nice day..  :)

Marci
