"Het, the Jerland dog was not socialized. He told me they did not have time to do anything with her" So you were told up front that the dog had not been socialized....or really interacted with at all because of time restraints of the breeder...but bought her anyway for a Therapy dog??? "I got her pedigree but did not look in the folder until I got home so did not know there were no registration papers" I wonder what other information you got but forgot about....I can see that you made a very bad decision from the start. Doesn't look to me like anything was held from you. You saw the dog in person...got to look at other dogs, was given paperwork but never looked at it or questioned it. And now you are wanting to come on to a very public site and bash someone. I am so sick of people wanting everything but not wanting to pay for it. And then when things don't turn out thier way they just go around talking trash and trying to blame other people. YOU made the bad choice. Clam it it is yours. And bringing up your $$ situation really doesn't say anything about you. Just that you didn't want to spend alot of money was all you had to say. Instead you are trying to make us feel sorry for you because you are on a fixed income. You drove up there...pick a cheep dog, knowing that this dog was shy and unsocialized...and you want it to be a therapy dog in a Phyc ward...if you didn't know that this dog was shy and scared, then you really don't need to take a dog around sick people...Have you ever been on a psychiatric ward...very unpredictable, you have to watch your dog and all the people around you. You will need better judgement skills befor you start out doing that. Also I dont' know this breeder from a hole in the ground. I am just sick of pet people wanting everything for nothing and then blaming everyone else for what they have got.

Anyone else think this story sounds a little like the Screwedbybroker story? Vickie

Drakegsd, If you read her post again... she volunteered to disclosed her living income in public, therefor she made it our business. Nobody forced her to do this. How on earth can you take care of a German Shepherd with an income of $623 a month? I'm not trying to be rude about this, just a legitimate and valid question. If you know the secret of taking care of a German shepherd that cost less than 623 dollars per a month, Please let me in on this secret.. It's time that I start saving my money and still take care of my 2 dogs with first class treatment (after all their both my babies, I want the best) Vonissk, As I told DrakeGSD, This person volunteered to reveal such information to be publicized. Do not criticize me for it, since she made it my (and everybody else) business. Geeze some of you guys really enjoy starting a conflict and fights rather than focusing for the best of the dog. This is so funny... how you claim to have 2 dogs that are higher quality than my 2 dogs..Why dontcha prove it. If you already bought your dogs titled... that doesn't mean shit, you just lost. You manage to take the lazy way out. I raised my bitch from a puppy ( 8 weeks old - April 30 2004) and she is who she is today! You may see her latest pictures at http://shepherdcentral.com/viewtopic.php?t=3889 How dare you tell me that my dog, especially my bitch is not high quality! Do you want to put your money where your mouth is at buddy? Lets give it a challenge.. The only rules are... YOU MUST raised your dog as a pup ( 8 weeks of age) and did not ship the dog out to be titled by a trainer.. the dog must be H.O.T (if titled). Since you're retired.. You would have no problem sparing some time to come down to south Florida to see my bitch work. You would probably change your state of thought instantly if you see it for yourself. Please email me privately so we can arrange time and date for your arrival ;)

Brit-- Sometimes hon you really are your own worst enemy. I hate to see this, because I know any dog's welfare is of primary importance to you. The posters who believe money isn't the end-all to being a good GSD owner are totally correct, IMO. It helps when the bills come due, but most people find a way to pay off their credit cards if payment plans are needed. Having money doesn't always assure it will be spent on the dog when necessary. You ran with my post, and I don't want to see you become a target. I must say, though, you are a gutsy girl---take a breath---and realize there was more to this thread. Take to heart that the people who responded on this thread are ALL good owners. I just went on shepherdcentral and saw you and Zambi working together---that's all that matters---giving your dog a quality existence. I'm sure vonissk does the same.

You can't go wrong with Haus Miller. The $620. /mo. thing sounds scarey to me as a seller. Are Steve and Conni giving you free dogfood and health maintenance for the life of the dog too? (Wouldn't surprize me, having known them and their goodness for some 20 yrs. ;) If not, perhaps you shouldn't take on another dog unless/until your economic circumstances improve dramatically. SS

The cold hard facts are - it takes a fair amount of money today to raise a dog right. Not only has the price of a decent food gone out of sight, but vet bills can be cripping and most vets I know do not do pro bono work. It cost me over $3K to treat a GSD for leukemia. Yes, I could have had him put down instead, but opted to give him a chance. You never know if the new dog is going to be a healthy one like my present GSD or one that racks up literally thousands of dollars in vet bills like my first. Even a rabies vac and annual h'worm and lyme tests can be a major expense. I just paid $86 for those tests plus a rabies vac for Blitz. I'm certainly not saying that a person doesn't deserve to have a wonderful companion dog unless they are wealthy, but they should be able to afford to care for the dog properly. IMO breeders who know the buyers are on a limited incomes but still sell them a dog anyway, should be prepared to jump in and help out if it becomes necessary. That's a kind thing to do for a deserving person. Yes, it's ugly and not fair, but it's the reality of dog ownership in today's world.

LMH, I disagree with you :) I might be very outspoken but not my own worst enemy. A lot of people cannot handle the truth.. which they instantly get very defensive when being questioned. When I start seeing people bash me over the truth.. I laugh, however when they start bashing my dogs... It becomes personal. Nobody here expect 3 registered members (as far as I know of) have personally seen my dogs. They have more rights to criticize my dogs than anybody else here. Shelley Strohl, I'm nearly dancing around because you also see the big picture, unlike anybody else here. THANK YOU FOR SEEING IT! Maybe others could see it too :)

sorry, but food, shelter, love/attention are the only requirements that must be provided for to own a dog. Because someone can't afford 3K for emergency surgery or for cancer treatments is not a reason they can't get a dog. Most of the time people pay that amount of money so they can feel better about themselves and it often has NOTHING to do with the welfare of the dog. I know I could certainly raise a GSD on 600 bucks a month, i've done it with less in the past, things are much easier now, but I wish some would get off their high freakin horse sometimes.

Maybe there should be a recall on this years jelly beans or cadbury eggs. Every post on this messageboard is very negative. I'm not saying that we have to buy everyone's B.S., but cant we all just get along?
