 If I get a GSD I want one that I can go outside and play with for two hours or more. Or a dog that will enjoy hiking with me and my boys on a five mile hiking trail. Those horrible dogs that the AKC has created would be lucky if they can do a mile before tiring.

I can do all of that with mine.  And they can go more than a mile.  There are AmLine dogs that have ADs

riddlem2, what you are basically showing is a straight backed GSD. Those dogs come close to the dog I remember from my youth. One look at the video I mentioned probably would have validated your statement.

I looked up the video you were talking about. The dog looks to be sway-backed if anything. No thank you,  that can cause a whole new myriad of health issues.

 

"Straight-backed" does alienate a lot of good breeders. The "straight-backed" breeders produce dogs that look like coffee tables, and are usually waaaay oversized for the standard. I think you would be happy with a nice, moderate working-line. They exist all over. In fact the dog in the link that you said you wanted looks a lot like several Javir kids I know personally.

 

 

Which one is the original Rin Tin Tin? The sable? I've been told he was a saddle back.

The original Rinty was a sable. He was found in a bombed-out kennel in France during WWI. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rin_Tin_Tin

He was mainly a silent film star, and is credited with saving Warner Brothers from bankruptcy during the Great Depression.

As you will see from the Wiki article, there have been many Rin Tin Tins over the years. The one used in the TV series did not have very good structure, and was not related to the original dog.

The German Shepherd Dog Breeders Facebook group has a list of breeders (in the Files section) who title and health test their dogs. Of course, be sure to verify the breeder's provided information.
 

Dawulf, are you speaking of vom weiland? That's one of the kennels that breeds dogs that appeal to me. They aren't giant, oversized dogs but true to form straight backed dogs with a slight angulation.

And as for Run Joe Run, there is no way he was a sway back. I think the problem here is that the term "straight back" has been distorted by this new crop of breeders who are attempting to create a new dog without telling anyone. Twenty years ago, straight back meant a dog like Rin Tin Tin. Heck, I would venture to guess that the dog used in The Bionic Woman, Max, may have been a straight back. But, to make sure everyone understands, I'll just specify old, working style gsd.

I'm always curious what kind of rocks these "Old fashioned straight back" breeders live under that they think a GSD with normal, appropriate conformation is hard to find. I have a house full of them and so do most of my friends! They're called....working lines.
