Hernias in GSDs are quite common. In Germany, nobody even bothers to mention it. One of my imported females has a dime size hernia which does not cause any trouble during pregnancy, and she has had two litters in Germany and one here. None of her puppies had hernias. My other female had a litter and every puppy has a small hernia.
I don't see that as a problem and I tell puppy people, so they are aware of it. Some veterinarians go as far as telling some people that it is hereditary and a female like that should not be bred. I agree with Angela: There are other issues. A hernia is a cosmetic issue, unless it gets to a certain size. Luckily, my vet is a breeder himself (not GSDs though) and agrees with that.

Great info from all-thanks, and kudos to the breeder who WAS honest with me and DID offer what I considered a discount. It's interesting to note that in Germany it's not even mentioned. I also agree with Angela-far more important to focus on the bigger issues.
