What I just heard on the radio about this pet food recall blows me away! At first we heard about possible contaminated wheat gluten being the source of the problem, then it was rat poison. I couldn't understand how that much rat poison could have possibly gotten into such large quantities of food. Now I know. Apparantly, a large quantity of wheat sprayed with a chemical to kill rats was imported from China and used in all this food. China does not have the kinds of restrictions and checks that the U.S. or Canada has. Spraying edible wheat with rat poison is not done here. But China is a third world country which has no such restrictions or cares. My question then becomes, is this Chinese poisoned wheat also being used in bread products for human consumption? All part of the "wonderful" new global economy. DCW

I think that as long as you have more than 50% of the raw products going into production are manufactured in the USA, you can label a product Mfg in the USA. So 49.9% of the products going in can come from anywhere else. At least that is the rule for food production. Cheryl

I think we are goign to see more dog and cat owners make their own pet food and maybe even more people taking any interest in learning exactly what they are eating when they buy from the local supermarket or WelMart. It's ironic to think that farmers in this country cannot earn a decent living growing and selling produce, mainly die to foreign competition. Are we guaranteed that none of this Chinese rat poison doesn't or hasn't got into the human food chain? At the risk of sounding paranoid, poisoning exported produce would be right handy way to create some pretty serious health issues in this country, wouldn't it?

Blitzen, very right! I just recently decided to start buying food from the local Health Food store. It is more expensive, yes but all of the products are local and no pesticides used. It only makes sense in light of all of this to do the same for my dogs. This has really brought to life, "what are we putting inside ourselves"? It's really scary when you can't rely on what it ssys on the bag or can. Who knows what is really in there or where it came from?
