roborob, No judgement from here.
Bottom line is this... the dog is worth what she is worth to you and to her breeder/owner.
If she is worth 1500.00 then offer it and go from there as you said.
If the dog is worth 400.00 then well again go with that, But be honest with yourself first and foremost. If she is worth it she's worth it, If she is not she's not.
I don't think anyone can tell you what would be a good price to pay for this dog, None of us have met her, fallen in love with her, had her become part of the family, and so on. Only you can answer your own question.
As far as being ripped off, well again a matter of perspective, which none of us can properly evaluate given every persons situation/circumstance is different, Honestly how do price love, devotion, loyalty ?
Good Luck to you I hope you find a medium ground here and are able to secure this girl into your family. You seem to really have her best interest at heart, I can appreciate that from anyone !! :-)

She is being shown or competing at the NC show for untitled adult GSDs this week with the breeder so I know she has value as far as being a "good pedigreed GSD"...
For me there is lots of value, as most of you pointed out, I was going to spay anyway and having an adult dog saves me from the agony of housebreaking and basic obedience...Not to mention she has impecible breeding and is gorgeous and that I did fall for her the first time I saw her picture...Then we actually visited with the breeder and met her, from there it was pretty much all over, decision made...I know it made the breeder happy to know the dog was going to get a great home and companion so it works for both of us...I will be picking her up over the summer, until then she will enjoy life with the breeder, who bred her from her from one of her European showline females to a stud dog she uses with a great pedigree...
I will keep everyone as up to date as I can including what I wind up paying for her...Its not so much about the money as it is the principle...I expect to offer her $1000.00 and go from there regardless of what she tells me is the price...One way or the other that girl will be mine...
Thanks for all the support and if I came across as a little "hard" its just my nature but I am not much different from most of you...I have had GSDs my whole life just never a well bred dog like this, all my other dogs were BYB GSDs so this is a step up for me...
Its as good as we allow it to be or so my wife tells me anyway...

Robrob, I hope I did not come across as hard or arrogant to you. I certainly did not intend to.
If I did, I apologize for offending you. I was just trying to understand your point.
So, again, if I did come across negatively to you, I hope you will accept my apology.

roborob,
If the dog is being shown it has not been spayed, unless the rules are different in the US.
Regards.

All apolgies are accepted it is not my intention to be nasty or hurtful over this, I am a little sensitive over the whole situation though...
If the dog is currently being shown in NC then as K91 says how could she be spayed...???Now I'm confused as well, I will speak with the breeder ASAP after she gets back...
Breeders words exactly as she wrote them to me yesterday: The dog is being shown in an untitled adult class, apparently the show is over the weekend in NC...
To be continued I'm sure but are you positive that a spayed dog can't be shown...???Why would she lie about this, whats to gain...???

100% positive.... spayed dogs CANNOT be shown..maybe she is just saying this so you think the dog is better than it really is. I dont know what show she thinks she is putting this dog in, but this comes straight from the AKC web site "Spayed or neutered dogs are not eligible to compete in conformation classes at a dog show, because the purpose of a dog show is to evaluate breeding stock."
I own a spayed female GSD, very sweet, nice personality. I only paid $300 for her, she came from a GSD rescue..Im sure she was supposed to be a "breeder" dog for someone who couldent keep her anymore, Im not sure of her pedigree, but she is very nice looking probably from working lines. If you just want her as a pet and since she is already spayed, offer no more than $1000 at the most. The breeder is just trying to get the cash from HER, instead of from her "never-born puppies".
If the breeder insist she WAS at a dog show with her over the weekend, then she is lying up her ass, and I personally would have no more contact with her...
Good luck with her, if you do end up buying her :-))

OK does anyone know if there is a show for GSDs in NC this weekend...???Right now I am totally at a loss as I can only tell you what she has told me...If she is showing the dog in question then either she has been lying about her being spayed or attempting to drive up the price...???I just can't except that right now...It makes no sense as I originally was going to get a puppy from the "planned breeding" that would have cost me $2500.00 and not the reduced price for a spayed female...Not to mention that I mentioned we were interested in a "future breeding" she was planning with one of her better showline females to Falco Vom Moorebeck...I just don't get it and we made the effort to go and visit with her for over 2 hrs so we could talk about everything and anything for both of our needs...
Lets say she is showing the dog, what kind of proof can I ask her to verify that she did indeed show the dog...???
With all of this going on or not it shouldn't make any of the breeders on this site wonder why breeders make the rest of us feel like its "us against them"...This whole thing is wrong, wrong, wrong...
All I ever wanted was a quality bred GSD with a good pedigree and good health instead of a BYB...I am very frustrated with all of this and will find out what the hell is going on here...
Thank you everyone right now I feel like a fool...This has become sad and the saddest part is that if I walk away its the dog that loses...

Especially with a female dog, being spayed isn't always obvious, and cannot be verified at a show. She could be showing a spayed female, but this too, is against the rules. So a) the dog is NOT spayed, b) the dog is being showed as intact when it is not, c) the dog isn't really being shown, or d) the dog is being shown at some nobody sponsored show, and they don't care if the dog is sterilized.
I would ask for proof of placement in the show, and then you will find out how honest the person you are dealing with is being with you. ;)
I know you love this female--but remember that there are always other dogs out there to purchase. I assume she is hip certified and titled, since she was going to be bred?
The most important thing is that you trust the person you are working with. Without trust, I would not buy a dog from anyone, regardless of price!
Good luck!

I have worked as a vet tech for many years and have seen and heard of things like this happening! Maybe the staff at the vet clinic accidentally wrote the dog up for a spay in stead of OFA, spay, OFA they sound the same, rhym anyway! I was told once of a cat that came in for a dental and the owners asked if they would put the cat down, they meant sedated for the dental and the cat was euthanized!
Shit happens!

Melanie,
The female we've been talking about is not titled and her hips are rated as HD-OFA-Good, she was born on 22 Sept 04 and was going to be bred while she was a 2 yr old...I believe thats when you can title an dog as far as I have been led to believe...
This whole thing has me wondering and has shaken my faith in the person I've been dealing with, I will give her the opportunity to explain before I jump down her throat though...Thats only right as maybe I haven't been told the whole truth/story...???There could be an explanation somewhere in here that I have missed, I doubt it but...
What gets me is that I've had BYB GSDs my whole life and this was supposed to be my big jump up at the big dogs with quality behind them...You know hips, elbows and all around health not to mention QUALITY...
I don't know what to say anymore about this situation but like you said if I can't trust this person then I will walk away and its the dog that loses out as well as my wife and I who saw and know we want the dog...I would love to get to the bottom of this sooner rather than later and have left 2 e-mails for my breeder to respond to ASAP...
She is leaving for the "show" either tomorrow or Friday, I wonder what show (NC) she is in and what the results will be...???Either way I will ask to see the paperwork and any certificates she might have received...
I'm sorta bummed out over this whole thing right now...
Thanks to you and everyone else for their concerns though...Right now I have to get back to work...
