To OP:
I hope you do decide to disclose the name of this "breeder"... I will be in the market for a pup within a couple of years or so and want to know whom in MN to stay far, far away from.

How can a vet screw up that many breedings? Presumably it was by AI but still. Kind of doubt that story.
Sounds like a scammer to me. I despise those people who cheat hard working people out of their hard earned $$$.

Edited to add:  Say you would expect 8 pups per litter x $500. deposit per pup X 5 bitches bred per month ( even if you don't have that many bitches).  That is some really serious money!

How would you really know they have all the dogs they show on a website or ad?  If they keep all those deposits they do not sound at all ethical.

I don´t understand this kind of business practices - I`d be willing to pay a deposit for a puppy out of a certain litter, but I´d NEVER be willing to accept a puppy out of another litter. That said in case the breeder is not able to give me the puppy I paid for in my world he would have to refund my deposit.

Just curious...what caused this thread to reactivate 3 months after the last post to it was made?

The breeder should refund the full amount as the way your describing what happened, don't be afraid to mention a kennel name to warn others of dishonest people if that's what indeed happened as you said. 500 is a lot to loose,my deposits are only 100 and I list them as non-refundable but there can be exceptions and if I cant deliver on what I promised the buyer then a full refund will be given, and no puppy buyer should ever be forced to roll their money into a diff. litter down the road as some kennels like to do.

Folks, breeding is not an exact science and shit happens. I have had two different deposits with two different breeders on litters I wanted a pup out of. Through no one's fault, health, fertility, vet issues, inaccurate progesterone tests, the breedings didn't take. My deposit gained me first refusal on any breeding available of my choice. Because I am very particular it took two years to get the genetics I wanted. No refund means no refund unless you make other mutual arrangements. Both parties get stressed, the breeders expenses continue and he or she has lost probably the entire year income. The buyer is faced with waiting another 6 months or longer to get their desired pup. At this point it doesn't sound like anybody is trying to cheat anyone. From the size of the deposit I would expect this to be a $2000+ pup and in good demand. I would ask if any other arrangements could be made, perhaps if all agreed you could sell your deposit if you don't want to deal with this breeder.
Some of the best animal breeders and trainers I have been fortunate to meet were not nearly as good dealing with people as they are dealing with animals, but that did not make them dishonest.

This is BS: OP needs deposit refunded...

Exactly Nans gsd it sounded like the breeder wants to put the puppy buyer on the hook or look for an excuse to keep the deposit and not get a pup either,I almost had the same thing happen to me about a year ago it took six months for the breeder to get my deposit back and I know what kinds of stress some of these puppy buyers go through.

I'm still trying to figure out how this thread bobbed to the surface again after being dormant for 3 months.

Nothing sinister hexe...I posted an answer to the thread. I did not see it when it first came up.

kitkat, wasn't thinking anything sinister, just surprised to see it resurrected, and wondered if there'd been a new post to it by the OP that was later removed, or a post from the breeder, someone else chiming in that it had just happened to them, or something similar. Wondered the same thing about the IPO dog sans sleeve thread that has also bobbed to the surface again.

I'm a curious creature, and wonder about stuff.
