Look at the room with the 3rd row of seats down. I could haul a baby elephant.

LadyFrost,
We lie to ourselves first before any other, we lie by omission.
It's been a while,

Moons.

Bee, interesting....so stranger vs. someone you know well changes persons fundamentals? in other words i would kill a stranger to save my own life but would not if its someone i know, or love...
Moons..I am good, thank you.....how are you?....if i am honest with myself i would agree with you, but inner stuborn bitch in me says I have fundamentals and understanding of life to know that chances of something like this to happen are zero to none. So I can choose to live in oblivion of my own self assurance by assuring myself that i am better than #1.
hmm....interesting...

I like my old ford truck (68) wouldn't trade it for anything.
As for Toyota's they are built well, I mean quality control is very important to them, but the engeneering and design could stand much improvement.
I just sold my (91) jeep cherokee with almost 300 thousand on it, still ran like a top although it looked like shit, still have my other cherokee's none of which are new.
I think cars are like anything else, you can get a good one or a bad one and not any certain make, but some will always stand out so it's more a personal choice than anything else.
I haven't bought a new car since 74 and it was a ford, the cam bearings went out at 60,000 miles.
Still hoping for that Cobra clone before I get too old to enjoy it....LOL

I'm good I guess, no use complaining....:)
One must always assume they are better and go from there.....:)
I am a bit disapointed with my eye, and now it's time to deal with my teeth...old age is not the golden years by any means.

LF,
Yes, think about it... I am sure your nature would prevent you from killing someone you love, to save yourself. You have a conscience, living with that would haunt you until you did die. The other option you have, that is not mentioned, is to choose to die together, if living means not being together. Think of the scene in Hunger Games. Katniss and Peeta were about to eat those deadly berries rather than be forced to fight each other to death. He was going to sacrifice himself to her, without that option.
A stranger is so much easier to perceive as a threat, if their survival means your demise.
But, don't forget how really mean and cunning the first part of the story scenario really is. #3 has been set up with no possibility for a good ending, except to find another place to sit for the rest of his trip. I have a feeling he doesn't do that in the book, but instead is led down a path of more struggles; continuing to lose himself. Just a guess, lol.
Isn't it ironic that #3's morals are being redefined by the con, using the ideas of politeness and virtue, some of the very guidelines society uses for its glue, against him. It was #2, who actually put #3 on the spot with his wrongful act of cheating. That #1 was not concerned about how cheating changes the game, should have told #3 that the card game was not important to the pair. They found his weakness, perhaps it was his conventional pride? They wanted his doubts to exploit and that was the real game.
IMHO
