gsd100,

Lifting the dog off the sleeve is done before teaching the out in protection (while you are building drive in bite work as needed).  It has nothing to do with the "out" you taught as a game using a ball or tug.

Ous ist Ous! Once again the only thing 2 dog trainers agree on is that the 3rd trainer is doing it wrong, LOL.  Corleone said it right, you need to do this with the folks you train with.  I personally am not a screamer so I say ous in a normal tone.  The dog is not deaf.  Sometimes when you yell it or scream it the dog can have a drive change.

Like most training this should not be cookie cutter either.  I have scene the helper take the lead and correct the dog into the sleeve ( done correctly very effective).

With the dog on the sleeve say ous and slowly raise the front legs off of the ground (leash attached to prong) until sleeve comes out.  very uncomfortable for the dog but also effective until dog makes the association.

You can go Koehler method and ye old flank, ala many LEO agency's.

Well time'd pop correction on the prong is usually sufficient for most dogs that know the out but are in drive.

If the dog is still high in drive when off the sleeve move to obedience to gain control of the dog.  Many out issues are a result of handler dog conflict in regard to hierarchy (lack of respect for commands).

But if a dog won't out a ball why would I expect him to out a sleeve.

teaching the out before protection work begins is a step in the right direction. at least the dog will have a clue what you want. whether it transfer to protection is a 50 / 50 but it certainly cant hurt.

im only a carpenter;o)~
