This might or might not help, for the future:
I used to have a bitch who got these regularly ...
until I discovered a link with dairy products,
and stopped giving her milk, cheese, yoghourt &c
completely.  She never had another attack.  You
could try that with your boy ?

BTW  Sticking an applicator in his ear to get any
cleaner right down into the 'dogleg' canal  WILL NOT
HARM HIM.

Boil one cup of water add half of cup of vinegar 2 table spoons of peroxide, put it in a spray bottle and shake well, and let cool.

Clean and dry ear, then freely spray the inside of the ear .Let it sink in for a minute before you allow dog to shake it out.
Do this twice a day for a week, then once a week for the life of the dog.
Yeast infection is a terrible thing for a dog to endure,it can litterally drive them insane if its bad enough.
After the dog stops shaking his head do not dry his ear after treatment.

Vk, a dog's ear construction is very different from a human ear. As Hundmutter said, it will NOT hurt your dog to clean with a swab down inside the dog's ear. If you don't remove the gook out of the ear before treatment, the meds will not be affective. Didn't the vet clean your dog's ear when it was at the clinic?
Did your dog go swimming recently? Swimming in creek or pond water will frequently cause ear problems.

I use Zymox and wipe the dog's ears daily.  I don't cram the wipe into the ear, but typically the dog will shake their head and it looses the ear gunk and I wipe it out.  The Zymox is an ointment I drop in and then massage the base of the ears to work it down into the ear canal.

ETA: Per Jenni's post wanted to clarify that I mean "daily" when a dog actually HAS a yeast infection.  Otherwise I never clean ears, no reason to.  They won't smell and aren't gunky.  Zymox will help kill the yeast, soothe the ear, and loosen up the gunk so it can be wiped out.  Luckily I haven't seen a yeast infection in a few years and gave my Zymox to a friend whose lab mix had a yeast problem.

My vet has instructed that if the gunk is not cleaned out of the ear canal by using ear cleaning swabs, that you are not going to get anywhere in clearing up ear problems.
