Scratch that, I just read some on the panda thread shared

Yes: Google it. Sunsilver looks to be right

Snip: The pattern continued to be studied until the causative mutation was located by Mark Neff, Ph.D., a geneticist at UC Davis. The mutation was found on the KIT gene, a gene widely responsible for white patterns, regardless of species; and like many other KIT gene mutations (although not all) the Panda White Pattern is an embryonic lethal when homozygous. This means that pups that are homozygous for the Panda Pattern do not develop in the womb and are reabsorbed very early in the development process.
It means when 2 panda color GSD are bred 25% of embryos die. The gene is lethal when 2 copies are inherited and for this reason they will also never breed true.

Did Dr. Neff actually say this or is this information second hand?

GSD Lineage thank you for posting this--in other words the coloring is a detriment to the breed. gene wise. I have already thought so just from their looks etc. because they are some fugly mutt looking dogs...........sadly they will go down as the blues and livers, rare and worth zillionz of bucks. What in the hell is there a standard for if these people already know all the ins and outs of our dogs?

I disagree that they are "fugly" but to each their own. While I do not own one, do not seek to own one, and have never even seen one in person, many of the ones I've seen in pictures have been quite fetching IMO.
