Some say spinning is a neurological problem - it might be in some cases.......  I am no expert to say that is true - might be in some cases - could be environment in some cases - other cases it might be just frustration....

Case in point; ...I have a male that I do not crate unless I am going to the club to train - but if he is not the first dog I acknowledge when I come to my dog kennels - he will spin........  If I acknowledge him first- he doesn't spin..........  spoiled is what I call it - frustration is another word for it.....  I do however - give him a pat thru the wire - and move to the pup that is crated to go out first---- he is happy with that....no more spinning..... I only acknowledge him due to the fact that I have spent tons of money from tail issues from him hitting it continuous on anything and everything - and if he spins - more vet bills..........  so I humor him.......a small price to pay.

You first need to figure out if your spinner has a neurologic problem - or is it from frustration.......  that does make a difference in how you address the situation.......

Just my opinion ..

My first service dog, (dual purpose) a mal, was a crate spinner. No idea of history before picking him up but he would spin so fast and hard that he would rip the tip of his tail from hitting the walls and grids in the kennel. These were not small crates. Custom, that fit the entire inside of a ford escape. (Talk about a mess). He was also a K9 that no one could come near the vehicle or another K9 could not come near the vehicle, all hell would break loose. This was my first dealing with Mals. He was a GREAT Bomb dog so I just took it in stride.

All my GSDs have been crated, some at times for long periods of time due to work. No spinning whatsoever. Now in their kennels the two girsl will spin a few turns out of happiness/excitement when I'm coming down the driveway.

I am not saying that it can't happen due to over crating but my pup came as a babe doing it.  She had a very heightened neurological system and became easily overstimulated.  She doesn't do it much now that she is almost 10 LOL but occasisonally when she gets excited I get a spin or two.  I always interupted it when it happened.  Exercise is key as well as alot of handling when a pup.

She is a czech workingline GSD.
