ZW system is based on submitted xrays. It does not take into account dogs not "officially" xrayed/submitted for rating.

Ie; "Joe Blow" in Germany raises a puppy to 9mos. Takes puppy to a vet in Germany for prelims (like we do here in the USA), puppy's hips look awful.
Joe Blow does not wait till pup is 12 mos old to "a stamp", he "disposes" of bad hipped puppy in some manner and starts again with a new puppy.
Out of litter of 8 puppies, only 3 are "a normal" and the other 5 are either rated/xrayed, or were done earlier and there was a problem.

ZW is based on a stamp ratings, so it is still wise of the consumer to read the ahnentafel and see how many pups in the litter, how many xrayed etc before settling for a ZW# in my opinion.

Often, another xray of a fair rated dog will get a better rating. I had it happen 2 times and know plenty of others who have had the same experience. In fact a few of my friends routinely redo all fairs as they know they are probably going to get goods. Makes no sense to me, but they do it.

Don't get hung up on ratings, fair, good, excellent, all are dogs with no radiographic signs of HD, normal for breed and age. IMO it a much smarter idea to try to keep track of the status of sibling's hips. I'd have to think twice about using a clear dog with sibs with moderate to severe HD.

A zw is still a far more comprehensive look if you're smart enough to look at the whole family/ped.

Also agree with Blitzen.

Upset that jdiaz doesn't think I'm crazy. There's a certain freedom in having everyone think you're crazy.

Sort of like the notion that Indians never killed crazy people ?

Fair hips still look very good, i would not worry much if thats the only fair hip in the pedigree.

Would rather have a dog whose entire family tree, including aunts, uncles, siblings, grandparents, etc. all had Fair hip ratings, than one whose parents were both rated Excellent but both were the only normal hips in their respective litters.  1 Excellent rating and 9 Dysplastic ratings in a litter of ten pups does not make me want a pup from the dog who got the Excellent.

seems like people are not worried about (a)2 ratings but panic about fair.........

(a)2 includes the lower half of fair, all of borderline and the upper quarter of mild - yet people buy and breed with them all the time.

just an observation......

Sitasmom--that's if you go by OFA's rating chart--which has not seemed to hold true in actual experience.

I usually think of a1 = OFA good to excellent. And a2 as Good to Fair. And a3 as Fair to Moderate.

And still some a3 dogs have been re-tested after being imported and gone OFA Excellent. Others have been re-xrayed and been very dysplastic. I think that can be attributed to the fact that hips that are on the border at 12 months can go either way--getting better or getting worse as the dog matures.

I'm looking right now at Fred Lantings book, "Canine Hip Dysplacia and Other Orthopedic Disorders" New and greatly expanded version....Chapter 10 - page 215
there's a chart comparing different countrys hip rating schemes.....

SV (a)1 = excellent and most of good
SV (a)2 = a tad bit of good, all of fair and most of borderline
SV (a)3 = a tad bit of borderline, most of mild HD
Mittlere HD = a tad bit of mild HD and all of moderate HD
Schwere HD = severe HD
SV (a)6 = acctable from foreign country

Mr. Lanting has spend years researching this and I believe him.

corrected my previous post.....
