Normally I wouldn't waste my time, but I have a little free time on this Sunday morning, (and Chick-fil-a is closed!)
"Are you following the tour group?"
That one went over my head.
"I was asked.................$12,000.00 for dual purpose dog."
Maybe I missed it, but who asked that question? I didn't see it. Op referenced a dog, asked a question then stated her preference of a breed, then you responded with a " mightier than thou" attitude and let the world know your thoughts which had nothing to do with the OP comments.
"Ken will buy.................................that chases a ball"
A poodle will chase a Ball. I don't remember seeing a poodle there the three times I was there.
Do you/or have you seen the dogs and where the dogs go to? What agencies or entities that have his dogs? Pentagon, Secret Service, State Department, Military, Civilian Contractors, C.C. O.S., Law Enforcement Agencies; local, state,Feds!
"It doesn't matter..................................chase the ball"
What in the world are you talking about???
You come across as a person that the next thing that would come out of your mouth is "I could take a bite without a sleeve from one of his dogs because they don't bite hard, don't have a full grip, etc. B.S."

Read Jeff's post where he asked me to show him a department that paid 8-12 for a dog. He believes the going rate is 2-4.5. My original point was "most" police K9's are washed out sport dogs who were "tested" over a period of time and found to not have what it takes to either make a podium, or be sold for top dollar. Departments do not have the funds to spend 10 -25 thousand dollars on a prospect that has yet to be started on K9 training. Sport people will spend that money and more as they travel and do weekly training. Departments do very little follow up training other than getting other K9 handlers together and helping each others dogs. Problem with searching through a Ray Allen catalog to become a "dog trainer" is these guys didn't even train their dogs, they were purchased as finished animals and then "handled". The ability to drive a car does not make you a mechanic,,,or Mike and the Mechanics.

Here's what I mean about "washouts". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bl6KaOzr9VU&NR=1 This was posted under another topic but shows exactly what I was saying. Here's a cop who just throws on a sleeve that was purchased from a catalog and automatically he knows how to do bite work with a dog. Bad bite work, bad decoy/helper work just an average dog, but the Modesto CA PD thinks they really have something there and I guaranty you, they paid a pretty penny for that "superior" working dog. Wouldn't you think that if you were going to do a demo on television you would use your best dogs and bring in a professional to set up a more impressive realistic performance? Definitely underwhelming.

His great grandfather on his fathers mothers line is Basco's grandfather as well. I would love to see this dog work.

Duderino,
I have no problems listening to what you say. I have no problem even debating what you say. I don't even have a problem if you're right. Or if your right and I am wrong.
What I, and I only, have a problem is the vast generalization, spewing opinionated information, sprinkled with a little "mightier than thou" or "what I say is truth" demeanor. I have no idea what your bio is, experience, training, skills or dog/dogs ownership/handling is. But to come out/on and blatantly shoot down what anyone else says or know, unfortunately that's where I have a problem. If I am in the wrong or the bad guy then part of me apologizes.....................
I'm a visual person, technical, articulate. No way do I know everything and I don't let my pride or ego interfere with learning when someone knows more than I do. I was going to state earlier, and was hoping working handlers would've jumped on. Maybe they didn't want to be bothered or this thread wasn't important enough? Don't know. But for starters; Do you have any idea of the amount of paperwork involved with having a working K9; MWD, LE K9, contracted K9 etc., etc.? An enormous, enormous amount, daily logs, practicals, training, certifications, monthly and annually! Depending on the agency/entity some times they can't afford the costs involved with a K9 and that cost falls on the handler. The irony out there is these dogs are doing the same job every where but over at this department this handler is allotted $300.00 a month for dog food and over at this department the handler is allotted $0.00
Now to comment on your above post...... Can't honestly comment too much on the video. So many factors involved. Funding, where the dogs are coming from, stateside and imported if imported. Honestly the bite was perfect but it wasn't terrible either. Not exactly the best place to have a PR exhibition but as POs, 3/4 of the time you're a pawn. Decisions, even the little are sometimes made by overhead. Could be a number of things: Department didn't want the PRing, and told everyone make it short, brief and move on? Maybe it was a last minute thing? Maybe the reporters had a "bigger" story and when they dropped by they said hey "we'll give you ten minutes and we're gone". Who knows? Maybe the dog was acquired and the two really haven't jelled just yet? Maybe the handlers' first dog? Maybe the dogs' first handler? Maybe the department or officers don't know how to razzle dazzle the public? I don't know? And where was that thread where the new K9 bit the reporter in the face/head on a PR video?
It's unknown what they paid for for the Police K9. I know of departments that can't afford to buy K9s and the individual handler will either donate his own dog or "sell" his dog to the department for $1.00 with the ability to buy him back when either leaving the department or the dog retires or gets hurt. That was my case. But at the time my department didn't want a K9 so I left and went civilian contractor. Professionally speaking, PR professionally speaking, and for the overall image of LEO/K9 yes you would hope for the "best" to be shown publicly. That's not always the case. Take anything, there are good and bad, the best way to do it and the not so best way to do it. A police K9 can fall into that category also. But your initial blog(s) and on others were generalizing the overall groups of say GSDs for ring work, Police K9s, Vohne Liche Kennels and so on. That one department is equivalent to a grain of sand on the beach. And to, can't think of the right word? But to sum up/rationalize your initial comments with this 1-2 minute video, I don't buy it, but if we could and 5 other people could sit and slap videos up trying to validate our points. But you, right from the gate were commenting on Mals great/GSDs couldn't do it. Then how PDs K9s are

My gsd does frech ring just fine. And I'm sure he has lots of relatives 9all Sch titled) that can do it just fine. Most gsd people do Schutzhund because it's more accessible and more popular.
And the two sports are just different. Not harder than each other, just not really comparable. French ring might be harder athletically on a dog, but Schutzhund might be harder on their noses. Not all police dogs are sport washouts, or less than. When people generalize, it just shows your ignorance.
