My male GSD had zero drive for a ball until around 8 months, now he has the most insane ball drive I have ever seen in a dog. He spent FOUR hours last night staring at the closet where his ball was put away! That was after 30 minutes of obedience and a 60 minute walk throwing his frisbee though deep snow.
What seemed to turn on his crazy ball drive was one of those blinky LED balls. I got him one of those for playing in the dark and after a few times with the blinky red ball he was nuts for any ball! The tug dive etc with him just took time, he was 18 months before I really felt like okay I CAN do stuff with this dog and he isn't a dud.

I'll look for some pics tomorrow. But last year we had @ 5'of snow in back to back snow storms. I live on a farm and I would be out playing with the dogs. (Didn't have Bella then) I would throw that Kong or Kong ball a good distance and Ana would race to/smell it out and then start digging to China to get it. She could barely walk let alone run due to the snow being so deep BUT that didn't stop her. All she wanted was that ball. Over and over again. That time put her at @ 7/8 mos.
