StephaniJ,
Are you getting pissy with me because I requested you post a referencing link?
So now I must learn you the courtesies of internet debate as well as the fallacy of emphasis on the hold and bark?
"WHY do YOU believe the soul of the dog is seen through the hold and bark? Because Herr Hassing said so? BTW, do you have a link to the quote. I would like to read this in context. I am thinking he did not mean what you are gleaning."
Here's a strong hold and bark for you:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTN5kTkdvME (Mr. Murphy)
You are kidding me right! I have no problem with anyone not agreeing with me. Such is life. Maybe its just the lack of emotion in my written word. But your obvious condescending word in responce to dissagreement is quite juvenile and very telling. You appear to be the one who needs to learn courtesies of internet debate. My opinion on a hold and bark is based on a dogs willingness to engage the helper, his vigor in the bark and the complete focus on the helper. For whatever reason you based what I have written to correspond with the amount of points a dog will attain in a trial. If you have an issue with Herr Hassing so be it, that's your beef. Herr Hassing has contributed much to the preservation of the working abilities of the GSD. He is one of the few who speaks publically of the issues facing the working GSD. Do I value his opinion and other like minded trainers of note. Absolutley.

Nice attention under distraction, obvious drive for the ball. I teach my dogs to bark on command for their food.

What does being able to substitute a ball for a helper in the blind tell us about the dog's soul?
Re Mr. Murphy: Of what value is the exercize to the breed if a JRT can do it better than 98% of the breed?

Hi Stephanie:
I didn't actually look at the 2nd video you provided because since the first was a video of Mr. Murphy and considering the rather hostile attitude I have detected from your posts thus far, frankly I figured why bother? As far as Mr. Murphy doing it better than 98% of the breed, he never would have passed since his B & H and guarding are extremely faulty. I am sure you know why.
I have no need to get in a pissing fight with anyone. Of course I don't know you, and I might be misunderstanding you, perhaps you do not mean to come off arrogant and hostile, but instead are just overly abrupt. Though I have to say your writing is vaguely familiar. By any chance are you Jeff O.'s girlfriend?
So thank you Kyle for posting an actual clickable link to the Bart Bellon video she tried to link. I don't think anyone would take away from the fact that Bart Bellon is a very talented trainer. The truth of the matter is I think it illustrates a point I was making previously. When you work a young dog, you work in prey drive, if the dog is going learn the exercise as a young dog he must learn it in prey drive. Too much aggression can ruin a very young dog.
It is my opinion that once the dog understands the basics of this exercise, he must be worked in defense to get a true picture of what the dog is all about. As I said before, it's not something I am good enough to put into words, but for me, it is very easy to know it when you see it, the rest pales by comparison for me.
As nice as that H&B might appear to be to some people. in my opinion, there is a big difference in disposition between a dog barking for a ball and a dog who is being pressed by a good helper.
