hiya i,m a show exhibitor/breeder from the uk.go with what you want.it isnt up to anybody else what your call(pet name here in uk)name is.i think Xander is a very good name.i personally like to name my pups with unusual names which no one else has.my youngest is registered with the uk kennel club as RHENMEISTER(MY AFFIX/KENNEL NAME)chi-ki-mi and i call her chiki and yes she most certainly is a very cheeky madam.i hate using run of the mill names.most gsd kennels here in the uk(show kennels)use german names as the other posts on this thread have indicated.i wish you well with your new pup and good luck.Carole Spelman.

Gee lemme think...name a dog Glock, or Xander or Magnum....or name him Precious or Pansy or Prissy...Ummmm I suppose it would make a K9's job easier if the perp was doubled over in laughter when he hears the cops yell "Get 'im Penelope".  Oh yeah, that's gonna leave a lasting impression.  LOL

Jyl, his puppy will definitely be a Pistole! Glock is a lot easier to say than Smith and Wesson, too. Maybe I'll name my new puppy Winchester. Or Double Ought Buck.

DebiSue, that's funny! I can only imagine how serious a K-9 would be taken with a "pretty" name! LOL My husband had thought about calling him Magnum but we both finally agreed on Xander.

Jenni78, your Xander is a very handsome boy.  I hope that my Xander turns out to be just as handsome.  Less than a week before he comes home.  I can't wait to get him home and start making him part of our family.

Carole, I like the idea of having a German name.  A lot of people don't even know what Xander means so if nothing else, it sounds cool and is a nice conversation starter.

Whatever his papers are going to say is one thing.  What you choose to call him in every day life can be whatever you want.

I believe monosyllabic names to the best as they make a concise noise maybe even a bit like a bark that a dog can readily relate to.

Know what language you are going to train your dog in and make sure the name you pick  does not sound like one of the commands- for ex. you train in english and you name your dog Clay which would get confused with the command "stay".

ashlynsmom...nothing i entered was meant to be mean spirited, but it seems that most people on this board can't take critisism.i have my opinions, and after 15 + years around german shepherds,i've heard my share of "CUTE" and "MACHO" sounding names..i have my preferances..but i've seen tons of"DUKE,KING,TANK,GLOCK,MAGNUM,PRINCE.most if not all were real crappers, reglated to less than "ROYAL" status, chained to a post in the back yard....my point.....the dog could care less...he'd be just as happy with a name like"MUDBUTT",if that's what you desire to call him,so,if you're gonna get your pampers in a bunch everytime someone comments on your post,it'll only turn you bitter....not good for you or anyone else...i wish you the best of luck with your pup,and i plan to continue to post comments when i feel like it,but you don't have to read them....free country!

Ashlyn's Mom,
I am excited for you!
I am picky about names and always end up changing my mind a dozen times before I decide on one. I actually know of a few dogs named after guns: Glock, Double Ought Buck,  357, Pistol, Browning, 9 Milli,  and a Double Barrel
I like pretty simple names but nothing to weird or hard to pronounce....

Good Luck with Xander. I think it's a nice name.

We'll be picking up our boy, Xander, in about 12 hours.  I'm at the point now where I probably won't sleep much tonight.  My baby (she's 16 months) keeps walking around saying "puppy, puppy, puppy"....but it's more like pu---peeeeeee.  LOL

Thanks Stacy! We had such a hard time coming up with a name.  We really didn't want an ordinary name but we also didn't want something that we would have to spell for everyone either.  We wanted something german, just because, and we wanted the name to mean something.  Our second choice was Magnum (but it wasn't german...just because my husband thought if he turned out to be his K-9 he would be his "second weapon" lol).  Someone mentioned taking the first letter of my name, my husband's name, and my daughter's name and putting them together but our letters are: t, r, and a.  So that would either be Art, Tar, or Rat.  We didn't find any of those too fitting.  HaHa.

Crhuerta, that is cute.  I wonder what my daughter will end up calling "Xander".  LOL

Freemont, good point! That would be so confusing! I don't think Xander sounds like any of the english commands.  Plus, my other dog does mostly hand signals so I plan on using those mostly for Xander as well.

We got word from the breeder today that Xander weighed in at 16 pounds! There were ten in the litter and I guess even when at the vet's office, when all the others are a bit shy or timid, his tail never stops wagging!

Well, I'm off to try to get some sleep.  I have a busy weekend ahead of me.

Good night everyone and thank you for your POSITIVE comments.

The hourly countdown is the longest LOL We will understand and forgive you if we don't heard from you immediately. You will have your hands full between running him out to the yard to do his business, teacing him that your daughters pants (or anyone elses) are NOT chew toys, and all that good stuff.... :-)

Your 16 month old and Xander will keep you well busy.

My two boys (sona nd dog) are soon going on 3. Luckily my dog (Galan) is growing up and finally has some house manners. My new addition is going to be 4 months old in a few days and she and my son are driving me crazy haha!

Well hope to see some pictures soon. Can't wait to hear about his personality
Stacy
