I respect u Hexe, and u too Starrchar. If a white gsd suddenly appear out of two german-bred GSDs, give that the white gene is recessive somewhere in the earliest of the gsd, what would it be called? "a canadian or north american shepherd? Certainly, "NOT!"

 Rik,

With all due respect, that remark to Hexe was unwarranted, uncalled for, and just plain rude.    Furthermore, she is correct.  I have seen only a couple, but I have seen a white puppy from normal-colored parents.   Just as recessive-carrying "normies" can , together, produce livers, blues, or solid   black...they can throw a white every now and then, too.

Given that the whites have already been designated by the FCI as a separate breed (Suisse Shepherd), it is beyond all imagination to think the SV will waste a single second giving any consideration to them as a variety of GSD.  Their solution to their foolhardy decision to ban the langstockhär is ridiculous enough, IMO--they should have simply reversed the ban and gone back to the way things were prior: limiting the langstockhärs to KKl 2.

I agree, Hexe.   There are too many good dogs that have long coats and some excellent dogs carrying the gene.  THAT is what I am concerned about with the SV's machinations.  What is going to happen to those dogs who become known carriers who consistently produce a coat or two-eventually?  With the genetic bottle-neck among the show lines and the rapidly approaching bottle-neck with the working lines, that "old" 25% rate is bound to increase eventually.

based on what ive read i have been led to believe that the health of the gsd is never affected by color but is easily affected when people breed dogs based solely on color with no consideration to health.  I also have read that fading pigment when whites and normal gsds are bred together isnt because of the white gene but from the different tones of white... snow white has less pigment than buff toned whites. (?)  there will always be a demand for not normal looks in a german shepherd and there will always be someone willing to breed for that demand.  If the whites were to ever be accepted through the sv at that point there would at least be someone meeting that demand while still meeting sv requirements.  and if there are people who specifically want to make sure their dogs never produce any off color or any specific coat type there are dna tests now to see if your dog carries these genes and you can easily avoid breeding dogs who carry these genes to each other.
