How to communicate to my dogs, that bathroom visits are off-limits?!...well, that's virtually impossible. I laughed reading through the posts. Dogs do have a sense of humour now, don't they? I face the same challenges. My old GR insists that the door (seperating me & him) is just a barrier to be opened. Bathrooms appear to be the new "living room"/hang out area. He's too old to enforce any rules, so I just let be.
My young GR isn't so curious. But, when I'm getting ready for work in the morning, he lays along one side of the walls in the bathroom, and waits for me. Sitting down at my makeup table, is an invitation to "visit". He wants to visit, when I'm at my most stressed moments. Humans are complex, rushed and hurried. Dogs are social, physical, and attached. Sometimes I look at mine and think, they are a subtle reminder of what life should be like. "Hey lady...what's the hurry???", is the look I get. That "look" cracks me up, and makes me laugh, and the stress dissipates.
I don't have an answer to the OP's Q. In fact, I sometimes wonder if an answer is ever to be? From what I could see (from all the post in this thread), there are certainly alot of dog people that have clearly bonded with their K9's. That's never a bad thing. When a dog wants a human's company, you know you've got a companion for life.

"I Always wondered what it would be like to walk down the cleaning isle and buy that smelly good that you hand on the side of the bowl to sanitize the toilet or that pretty blue stuff you put in the tank."
Haha! I hear ya!
