Not to add to a reopened old thread, but that's not really a correct assumption. INCORRECT balance of nutrients causes deformities, not raw feeding. If raw feeding caused this, there would be no wild canids.

....and my four generations would never have happened, either.

You have 4gens. of raw fed dogs, Jackie? Way cool.

I will say that pregnancy is definitely not the time for someone who doesn't know what they're doing to go off half-cocked and experiment w/raw diet.

I agree. I think thats a jump saying that feeding raw caused the deformities. I'm sure Science Diet wouldn't cause deformities.   If that were the case then maintaining a genetic database would be a waste of time.

I had a pup from a litter I bred in 2003 that had some skeletal issues. I requested from the vet to put the puppy down. He didn't want to and said he would find the puppy a home. Prior to breeding this bitch I was talked into vaccinating her for rabies and in my heart I know that the vaccine did something to cause the deformity. I should have gone with my gut and passed on the vaccine.

I don't believe in interfering with Nature and keep animals alive if they are not suppose to. Sorry however for your loss. This is OT but I also don't believe in AI as a way to breed a bitch. Unless the issue is a distance one, if the bitch won't  breed on her own, then she is culled from the gene pool.

Bhaugh...agree 100%, right down to your view on AI. I blew a litter I really wanted to have because I couldn't put Capri on the plane b/c her rabies was expiring that weekend. No way was I going to vaccinate her then breed her. I drove her to a closer stud instead (who I was going to have the next litter with anyway, so it's not like it was a "lesser" stud) where a health cert. wasn't required and boy am I glad. The owner of the other stud encouraged me to do so anyway; he agreed that it was too risky, despite veterinary advice to the contrary.

Missyfly.........Very sorry to hear about the loss of some of your puppies........how are the other puppies doing? Can we see pictures?

Kerschberger........most horse people feel the same about their horses as dog people feel about their dogs.........reading about people feeding their dogs horse meat......really ticks us off  !!!

Furthermore......for you raw feeders who do feed horse meat (in the USA) ......I've got news for you......a lot of the horses sold for slaughter are ex-race horses........who have been medicated and supplemented up the Ying Yang most of their lives......so your not getting organic meat by any stretch!

I'd rather see horses used for feed than starved to death. I have a friend who feeds a lot of horse meat- most horses are given up by people who never (or hardly ever) vaccinated or medicated them, so it's pretty clean. It's certainly no worse than your grocery store meat!

Sorry I failed to check the date, so my response was unnecessary. Will check dates in future.

dogshome, did you read that thread and see the date? Someone commented on an old thread; it was from May. They died.

by missyfly96 on 05 September 2011 - 00:09

Three weeks after this litter another litter was born from this bitch's half sister.
The same stud was used.  Same results, she also had two puppies deformed the same way and they also died.  She was feed complete kibble.  So, they theory of raw vs kibble in this case does not seem to have anything to do with it. They lived in two different household during their pregnancies.   Besides even though this bitch ate raw she also did eat a little kibble (very little but some).  Seems to be genetics in these two cases.  The two bitches had the same father and the same stud for the litters.  Same results two deformed pups that died.
