Can't say much about crates on this end... our dog just lays around or gets stuck in a chair (he jumps up on them, but they move around and he's too afraid to jump down) while were gone, or he gets baby-gated in my dads room.

Anyway, the one I had for my Dallas was from Walmart. I don't remember what kind, but it was very sturdy and strong... but that was 9 years ago.

But funny story - and the original reason for me posting - when I was little (like 3 or 4) my family had a mini poodle. Well I decided it would be smart to climb into his crate and lock myself in there. And then have a panic attack when I couldn't get out. That was the day I decided I was claustophobic. xP
So yes, they are for dogs, not people!

The whole reason for questioning what size everyone uses for crates is it says it is a 40" crate, but?

I just went to Walmart and Tractor Supply store to look at crates.
I measured the Remington inside where the dog is and it is on 35", which to me seems small for a full sized Shepherd.  As the store clerk was getting one down for me one of the kennels had split all the way up one of the corners, that also makes me question the strength and quality.

So I went to Walmart, same thing 35" inside.

When I say full size Shepherd I am talking 75-85lbs.  35" just seems small to me!

To missyfly - 40" is going to be too small unless you have a petite female. My female is long and skinny and 56 cm in height and needs a 48" crate. I had a 40" first and it was too small for her to stand up and turn comfortably.

I think the 500 Vario is approx. the size of a 48", right?
Wow, Jenni, you got a huge dog!

I would like to be able to fit 3 kennels, (LOL Sita's Mom - Ford Exploder - what a cool carwink ), my Jeep Lobbertycheeky fits one 48", one 32" (I think) and one child restraint seat....

I think the 500 vari kennel everyone is talking about is 40" long and that measurement is the outside.
If anyone has one and can measure the inside for me I would appreciate it.
My girls are long and skinny also that is why I'm questioning if it would be enough room for them.
I'm also about to get a male puppy and taking into account he should be around 85lbs like his dad full grown I would like to make sure it will be big enough for him.

The other reason I am concerned is because when I put my girls in a 42" wire crate (which is actually 42") the alway seem like they are holding there head down while sitting so their ears down hit the top of the kennel.  That's way I don't see how a crate 35" inside would work.

If someone has a vari kennel 500 please measure the inside for me!

TingiesandTails, not really all that huge. Big, but not huge, compared to some showlines and Am. lines. Big for a WL, I guess. 26-26.5" tall, so really only half inch to an inch over standard. I think you're mixing up crate sizes. 500 is the typical airline crate size that an average GSD is shipped in, nowhere near 48". I would have to ship him in a 700, which is still only around 40-42" if I'm eyeballing it right compared to crates next to it that I know the dimensions of. My bf stole my tape measure (Men! Can't they buy their own tools? LOL) or I'd measure it right now. Don't feel like taking a walk out to the barn to get it.
