We feed our 9 month old GSD Acana Wild Prairie.
http://www.championpetfoods.com/acana/show-product.php?formulation=phfd

She was originally on TLC since that was what the breeder used and the food is made locally. (http://www.tlcpetfood.com).

However, she always had loose stools, had way too many movements (!), and was always ravenous. Switching to Acana made a dramatic difference very quickly- her coat became really soft and shiny, even though we feed her 1 cup less she isn't ravenous any more, and it cut her movements by half (now firm).

She also gets some raw beef (bones and meat) and boiled eggs since my in-laws have a natural farm (ie. not certified organic).

Ladyfrost,

Isn't the Kirkland the Diamond brand?  We feed Diamond Naturals Chicken and Rice.

Thanks Laura,

Acana has really good ingredients-and...... no flax!

I hope I can get a bag nearby.

I like Origen Regional Red for mixing with GreenTripe.com excalibur mix.  I would love to have a good chicken kibble to mix with chicken quarters.

Thanks again for the hot tip.

I think there is quite a bit of sterotyping in dog food.

I do not have high regard for experts who shun chicken by-product meal as inferior to chicken meal, for example.

Many food experts are not rational.

Often a food, a  part of a animal for food, is not fit for human consumption for attitudinal reason without scientific basis.

Why is some cooked fecal matter undesirable?

Wild dogs eat prey animals, shit in the guts and all. Alpha dogs in particular eat more shit in a large prey animal than beta dogs.

High Desert, depends what by-products they are. They can be ok, or highly inferior to meal. I don't feed by-products in a dog food, but I feed raw parts that would be deemed by-products sometimes.

Why would you say by-products are NOT inferior to meal?
