contimali....

come on..that is completely uncalled for....personal attacks on loved dogs is no different than attacking someones child...completely out of line regardless who you are or what you own......

by contimali on 25 February 2011 - 16:02

when did I attack a pet? I attacked a particular line. Get your facts straight, throw your emotionalism out the window.

by contimali on 25 February 2011 - 16:02

I know quite a few labrador patrol dogs.

are you kidding me?

you specifically stated   "gsd in your avatar than..... "

by contimali on 25 February 2011 - 16:02

Yeah the "gsd in your avatar" is a particular line I will attack. Need more logic?

I have friends with mutts that do a better job of protecting then some of the more popular breeds. So for family protection I doubt seriously if that is really breed specific. I was told a long time ago by a nice old man that he would rather have a large dog that is a wuse but is intimidateing then to have a dog that people feared. Less problems and less apt to be sued and the results are the same.

Yeah but that depends on what level of protection or security you want/need from a dog.

Long story short it is not as simple as saying this or that breed is the best. Genetics within the breed and training and handling all play a factor in what is best for any particular situation.

So much goes into this, I would say each protection breed was bred for differences that should be accounted for. To say that you would rather be taken down by a shepherd is silly you are talking about a breed that was genetically built for protection by thousands of breeders throughout its history to do just this one thing...sorry I love Labs but to say that a dog bred for retrive is more dangerous or better at taking down bad guys than a dog built to take down bad guys requires a bit of a check.

Doby, Rotties, Mals, Dutchies, GSD, Bouvies all these breeds were made and created with defense as one of their genetic corner stones. They have much alike due to this but all have significant differences from eachother. I would always recommend meeting and researching any breed before purchase especially if you are getting a dog for a specific reason. Most people should stick to pound puppies as they need us. For people looking for a specific jobs then purebreds exsist for that very reason.

My preference is the German Shepherd IQ wise they are the smartest of the working breeds and this means a lot to me, they are also much better with small children which I have a few of. They have an amazing ability to turn it off when they are at home and turn it on for work. Ironically the guy talking about Labs reminds me of my friend whos Shepherd goes hunting with him and his 2 labs and does actually do retriver work...not as good as the Labs mind you, but does do it.

Whatever it is you look to get remember that these dogs are working dogs and require a lot of attention and exercise. Make sure you have read up on all the dogs you are considering before making such a life changing choice.

Fenrir, he was talking about an American Line Shepherd.

It was maybe a joke, but any way you look at it,  most American Shepherd's are not bred with protection in mind, but to trot around a ring.  So it really isn't a working  breed.  That is what he meant.

*Facepalm* well I feel sheepish lol, yeah the AM have lost a lot of that edge, granted not to say that some don't still have it. I am sure that not all AM lines lack that. I responded because other breed owners were throwin down the smack lol, which is wonderful I think but had to stand up for my breed.
