Seen this clip many times. Stupid reporter, yes, but shame on the officer and the department that allowed it. This was for PR, obviously, and I'm sure the "higher-ups" knew what kind of fluffy clip the reporter wanted to do, and everyone should have known better.

Is it a training problem? Not necessarily. Is the dog "safe"? Well hell, it's a freakin' police dog, define "safe".  Safe for people to get in it's face and hover over it treat like a goddamned public teddy bear? Do you want a police K9 GSD or therapy dog golden retreiver?

Jim, the scenario you describe with the kid happens here, too. People are just nuts. There is NO respect anymore for a dog and their space, not just a police dog, ANY dog.  Because I step out of my house with the dog it must mean that everyone and their mother has a right to come and lay their hands all over my dog, and of course it should be a-ok and the dog should love it, after all, what are dogs for?

Keep in mind, people, there are different kinds of K9s more suited for different lines of work, and some K9 training facilites try to match them correctly. Is a K9 owned by an upscale suburb whose duty will be to do demos for schoolkids and likely never get a live bite the same kind of dog who will go to a very rough neighborhood where the dog will have an apprehension its first week? Of course not.

Very good video.....

All my dogs... if I sit down and have them on a leash,
pulling them ever so close into me. Will put them in
protection mode... all working dogs are like this.
Because they are bred be this way.

The reporter not only leaned into the officer, but
eyeballed the canine while he did it...

The dog protected his master as he should have.
And both people are the wiser for the experience...

And did you notice the way the reporter was patting the dog on the top of the head?  IMHO that kind of patting shows that he's not comfortable.  And, the dog knows it!  You can see it in the dogs face! He's uncomfortable because the reporter is uncomfortable.  Added the training the dog has had!  Again, the handler should be able and have read his "partner".   Totallly the handlers error.  It was an error and hopefully he's learned from it!  Read your dog.

MainlyMax,

I agree with you 100%!

Completely avoidable.  That cop has no business handling a K9, ever.  Some things can not be taught.
