Psycht

Why the hell doesn't the AKC refuse litter registrations from people convicted of animal abuse?

If someone is convicted of animal cruelty and the AKC is aware of it, they will suspend them.  The last one I prosecuted was suspended for 15 years and a 3000.00 fine.

In regards to placing them in foster homes, it depends on the case and the jurisdiction.  As ACampbell stated, the animals are considered evidence and if it goes to trial there can be "chain of custody" issues if the animals are parceled out.  The other very realistic concern is in the event of the case going south (or appearing to go south), sometimes dogs "disappear."  That happened in a case in my state but in that case luckily the "disappeared" animals were recovered before it became an evidentiary issue in the criminal case and lawsuit issue for the prosecuting jurisdiction.  I do not say lucky because I wish for the animal to go back to the alleged offender if the case goes south, I say lucky because one missing animal can cause a case to go south meaning that there will be not justice for *any* of the animals.

As hard as it is to understand, most of these prosecutors are trying to do right by the animals but they also want to make sure their case does not unneccessarily head south.  I have been in these situations and it is a frustrating place to be as a prosecutor.  I was just down in the Denver area a couple months ago attending a national conference on prosecuting animal cruelty and fighting cases that had attendees from across the country and there are a lot of dedicated prosecutors, animal control officers, and vets in the area that are fighting to do right by the animals.  Heck, I would not be surprised if someone from the office prosecuting this case was in attendance.

AKC doesn't care.  If they did, they'd probably lose more than 80% of their revenue.

Welcome back Hodie, the most knowledgeable poster to ever grace these pages.

I do wish a happier occasion had brought you back, but I suppose the seized dogs will now enjoy better conditions than they had with their scumbag owner, so that's something positive.

I highly recommend visiting any kennel you are contemplating buying a puppy from

I visited vom Banach twice before I brought Pharaoh home.  It was very inconvenient, 13 hours each way.

If more people did this there would be a lot less trouble.

Merry Christmas, Hodie and thanks for sharing this information. Awareness among all of us is probably effective in controlling these people. I agree with Psycht, the AKC will suspend....the key words are "if they are aware". In the meantime, as those wheels turn slowly, educating others is helpful.
