scarlet, there are all kinds of people in the world. As for me, I have dealt with issues like this several times.

neighbors dogs break into my runs when my dogs are in heat. I follow the SSS philosophy. Shoot, Shovel and Shut Up. No guilt at all. I do not allow my dogs to molest anyone. I expect the same from others.

MarineMom,
Glad you are OK.

I would not advise shooting the dogs. Based on the volatile reaction the owner had towards you he may come after your animals if you kill his dogs. You never know how a whack job like that is going to react if you strike out at him (thru his dogs).

I would recommend carrying pepper spray with you. You also might want to consider filing a formal complaint with the sheriff's office and animal control.

If you get lucky and are able to catch them (without harm to yourself) I would take them to an animal shelter on the other side of town say, Apache Junction.

Good Luck.

Rik,

Real good point.  I have decided my plan of action is as follows.  Now should I have to kill them I am going to feel bad.  Because the animals didn't cause this, it is the brain dead owners.  But I will not let them kill my stock or bite me.

Scenario one.
If the dogs are already on the livestock, I am shooting them with a scope from the porch.

Scenario two.
Not ever again go outside when these dogs are in the yard without pepper spray and hand gun.

Scenario three,
Keep the extra pepper spray out in the barn.

I have no problem dealing with law enforcement, we are allowed to shoot the dogs.  The things that makes me so upset.  I should not have to deal with this problem.  As you said Rik, my dogs bother no one, unless you come in my yard or house without permission.

How come this is just my problem? ( rhetorical ).  They are not my dogs.  They are on my property.  They are trying to kill my stock.  They are trying to bite me and my good neighbor.  It is not a law enforcement matter.  Animal Control needs a carcass, photos and witnesses.  And I am here laying out plans of action, so my stock doesn't get killed and I don't get bit or chewed up.  The owner of the dogs just yells and screams at me, for having to come get his dogs out of my fenced yard.

What is wrong with this picture? ( rhetorical )

CLC29,

You can't get near these dogs, they will bite you.  And I do have concerns about these people/owners and their reaction.  I sure can't let them/dogs kill my livestock.  But I don't want harassment from my neighbors.  No one out here even like these people, we all share the same problem and complaint.

Apache Junction would be fine, but all the Animal Control substations in each city or county, ask you your clerical questions and why are you bringing the dogs here, if you live somewhere else?  And will refuse the animal.  Oh' believe me, if I could these guys would be on a bus to Omaha.

The Sheriffs office won't take a complaint without a carcass, or if you get bit.  If they just show up and chase, they only take a phone report and really don't even want to do that, they have you make the phone report to Animal Control.

MM, clc makes the point of what you deal with. It is not the dogs, it is the owner and the consequences that may result from protecting your home and livestock.

You have every right anywhere in the U.S. to protect yourself and your live stock. The results of doing so may not be covered by your rights. Especially when dealing with someone who has no regards for others.

I hope all turns out well for you, but as I said, this is a bad situation to be in.

Rik,

For sure this is a crappy situation to be in.  No one wins. CLC29 makes a valid point.

Like I said before the glass is half full.  Tomorrow is another day, still dirt side up.

Alboe:

I spent 5 years working with Harris Co SO in dog program and then PI with Redding , Redding and Redding in Houston so I still have some of the equipment and the Deputy with Gal SO that met with all of us advised us how to do it..My son is very good with any electrical..and he can make and hang or install microphones even in the trees to capture him..He hollars from his front porch , his truck and it isnt anything nice or even repeatible..He also got into it with the neighbors and his wife and even his own Father who appeared at the Court house.  So yes, nutcase for sure and you have no idea what might tick an owner of these dogs off.

THe SO  has been out here about 50 or more times in 5 years..Time for action. Since I do not live here this is the first time I have witnessed it first hand and that is all it took....Now I can be the one to get the ball rolling... My son cannot even step outside in his own front yard without loose dogs pooping and he keeps an immaculate yard with no fleas..these dogs have fleas , no rabies and no telling what a bite would cause..The problem is going to get solved in COURT>

I firmly believe that its a God given right for anyone to defend themselves (and the lives of those in their care) by any means necessary. Even if it means a bullet between the eyes.

It's just that in cases as such I feel that the dogs are in part innocents.  Yes they are a menace and  a threat to the community that should not be tolerated, but all of which could have been easily avoided with basic socialization and obedience, or hell just keeping the dogs on the property.

It's not the dogs fault the dice that they didn't roll landed them with worthless owners, but 90% of the time the dog/s ends up facing death because of it while the owner gets a slap on the wrist by comparison (if that).
Me being the bleeding heart that I am  I know that I would feel horrible if I  had to shoot a dog no matter how justified I was in doing it. So if the OC is an option I would use it.

I would  bet money  if a law was passed that subjected owners to getting sprayed in the face with Sabre Red OC  anytime their dog was out terrorizing the public such incidences would be non existant...
(lets start a petition )
