This type of behavior is definitely a place seeking ritual. Males do it, females, neuters and spays do it. i don't consider the behavior any big deal at all. What I do take into consideration is the interpersonal reactions and relations in the dog to dog relationshipships.

Some of the females get along well, others not so well. Grimm,my male gets along with everybody.
All communities (i.e dog packs) are dynamic, things change almost daily

jmopaso how many dogs do you have in your pack? Sierra does that in mine....but the oldest male is her "mate" I guess you could say so positions never change in mine. Sierra is submissive to him, and then there is Buck who is the son of both of them. He is submissive to both of them, but they all play together.  My males don't do much of the grass kicking, they just mark where Sierra marks. One day they did it back and forth and I just had to tell them to quit lol. Sierra marked, then the males marked, then Sierra marked.

Both my female Poms lift a rear leg when urinating, but Carly never does.

It's not uncommon, and in my experience has little to do with how dominant the female is.  I've seen very strong/dominant females who didn't do it, and low ranking females who did.  And vice versa.

My girl doesn't hike her leg but she often kicks the grass when she is done.  I get tickled watching her tail when she pees...the longer she pees, the higher it curves up in the perfect saber shape.

Years ago I had a female do that. Sign of her being dominant. My girl would do that right after one of the other dogs urinated. Sounds like a keeper to me

My Kali does it, too, & she's the alpha dog around here...but really I think she just doesn't like to pee on her feet! When she's done, she also launches herself straight up into the air! Like a huge kangaroo-hop away from the 'icky'! LOL! jackie harris
