In Washington State, killing assaulting a police dog is a felony. It gets you much the same as assaulting a human police officer. Of course, killing a human LEO is a death penalty offense.

Hi Nia,
In my state killing a Police K9 is a class 4 felony.  The POS that shot and killed my buddies dog a few years ago got 6 years.  Unfortunately, it is a far less severe crime than killing or maiming an Officer.

VB,
I am going to try to make it, I think I am off that day.  I'd really like to go and bring Boomer to show our support.

Jim, I'd need to check the criminal code, but my recollection is that assaulting a K9 in this state can get you 10 years. The dog is a LEO, so it is aggravated and therefore "upped." Also, harming any animal in this state is a felony anyway. Add being a LEO, and it is big cell-time.

I am a member of Region 15 USPCA, I was told his handler was at our SDA trial this past Sat/Sun. Talked to the Training director of Camden County Academy yesterday and he said the dog performed his duty that night and the perp has the bites to show it. My condolences to Officer and family and the Twshp the dog worked in.

Hey Nia,
You know how it goes, often what a defendant can get and actually does get are two totally different things.  The guy that opened fire on us while we were making entry on a Narcotics search warrant got 10 years for killing my partner.  So, you just never know....we all expected a whole lot more.  I hope this guy gets a very long sentence.
