If one chooses to be a breeder of anything other than the pet market, then you will spend the money one way or the other.
It is much more "economical" and time saving to put the money into a good bitch (for whatever purpose) at the start, than to spend it a little at a time on stud fees, transportation, etc. and 3 generations later you are looking at the same poor specimen you started with.
I have not bred a dog in 12 years. When I did, it was always on a "small" budget and as a hobbyist. I did manage to breed/finish champions in 3 different breeds and 2 different countries. And what I learned is that it is much easier to do if you find a successful breeder and build on what they have already accomplished.
