I agree with everything your saying Don
I just prefer to err on the side of caution
Another thing for people to consider for locking your gates is children with mental disabilities entering your yard. My dogs would never hurt a child but it is always better to be safe than sorry

I would wash and send him his shorts though, just to show how concerned you are, so he won't try to sue the pants off you........

This story is one I have heard over and over again
Yes, you must keep gates locked with padlocks.
Dogs never are predictable no matter how well trained they are.
They sense things we do not..
Also people are irresponsible. I had the electric man jump over my fence with one of my most aggressive males behind me and I saw him drive up but didn't know it was an electric co. man..Little truck and way back on my property I could not read it..
I put Dieter up and proceeded to front..He was on his way up my path when I hollared at him..He lbantaly said he was an electric co. worker ..and he had no identification on his T shirt ...I made him stop and told him how dangerous of a thing he just did...THE eLect. co has my name on a CAll FIRST list..He said they did not...I told him he could have been mauled and he said....NOT ME>>>I would have taken that dog down! See the mentality of workers?? Well I made him call the boss and I had it out with the boss.over the phone....DO not let any worker back talk you like that..
I told him yeah, and you would be in a body bag about now if I had not been here..
HE later apologized and his boss told him to get a work shirt on ...one that identified him...
THEY call most of the time and when I am not home I have to lock my protection dogs up in fear of uneducated people jumping over my fence... Kind of a proof that todays world is filled with BLIND people.
ALso I learned that signs must say NO TRESSPASSING not beware of DOG>..Insurance Compainies will refuse to insure you and if one of your GSD bites someone even if you think it is within the law..the sign is an ATTORNEYS gateway to a settlement...
JUST HOW THE WORLD OF LAW IS>>> I have a sign that says I DO NOT CALL 911
AND A GSD IS ON THAT SIGN
i ALSO HAVE A SIGN THAT SAYS,, IF FOUND HERE AT NIGHT , YOU WILL STILL BE HERE IN THE MORNING.......
i LIKE the sign that Cyrs said she saw....Smith and Wesson live here!
If you enter you will meet them or GOD

yellowrose I absolutely can't stand people with that guys mentality. That's just like our water meter guy. I'll be one to say, these meter people in the majority are complete idiots. They make dogs afraid, they cause dog attacks, etc etc.......I say that because I talked to the woman who comes to the houses that these guys are too chicken to go in because of packs of dogs. The electric guy is one who won't come in our yard, the guy they have now, if he sees the dogs out. However this woman told me, a lot of yards she has gone in, had packs of dogs or had some dogs that the other guys were too scared to go in because they were bit before. She has NEVER had a problem with any of the dogs, and when she came in my yard my dogs really liked her....my Huskies...... Anyway she said they just couldn't believe she went in a lot of the yards, the thing is, she is not afraid of dogs, she also likes dogs, and it seems like that, combined with women in general may help her. My dogs like women more, my dogs also like people who aren't afraid of them, but not in the sense that they "aren't afraid and will kill a dog who comes near them" As we all know, they pick up on those things. She also told me that they tell a lot of these guys, if the dog gets too close to you, pick a shovel up and beat the dog to death.
I think if meter guys would learn how to read dogs, a lot of the dog bites could be prevented since most are just nips from fearful dogs anyway. But a dog like some of ours on here.....I absolutely get irritated when they say oh, I can take down any dog, I'll just put my arm around them neck and break it right there. Or some I know tell stories of how they use to take down Pit Bulls, these guys are full of crap.

I knew a guy who had guard dog rental business. When he came to collect his dogs in the morning form a industrial lot he noticed his 2 dogs playing tug of war with a body of a would be thief. He had signs posted (DO NOT ENTER Trained guard dogs on duty. in emergency call : XYZ Phone number )
Police called coroner, got his statement and let him go. The partner of the thief who got away was charged with negligent homicide because he did not call for help and left his friend there.
But that is AZ USA. Here some things still make sense. I would not count on it elsewhere, or even in AZ all the time. Check the local laws and take all precautions. People do not have to read or be able to read, or to comprehend or notice signs.
In all fairness to such people, no matter what we thing, they do not deserve to die or get hurt because they are stupid, careless or uneducated.

I had to laugh at the Sign: If found here at night - you will still be here in the morning!
I remember one that said - "These GSD's can make it from the house across the yard in 3 seconds ..... can you?!!!!
Seriously, in UK there was a problem regarding 'Beware of Dogs' signs, and the suggestion instead to have 'Be AWARE of Dogs'.
A friend some years ago had her large detached garage broken into, and the car stolen. The dogs had been going ballistic, but she had not considered what was happening and commanded them to be quiet. Following a conversation with a Police Officer who came the following morning, she asked if she would get into trouble if she was to allow two of her Shepherds to sleep in the Garage, in case the culprits returned. Unofficially she was politely told that so long as; "They normally sleep there" - then they would be defending the property after being trespassed upon. However, the Officer added they must not have been put there for that purpose! Not sure how that stands in law today.
