I can only hope that some day I'm that good. That handler is great and her dog is really happy. My dog isn't perfect either, but I sure hope the one among you with the perfect dog will now stand up and show us your video.

The second video BabyEagle posted is much better.  The dog is not perfect and in a serious trial would lose a lot of points, but it is much better. That video and this one are from the 2010 Battle of the Bulls which appears to be mainly a bull breed type club. They also had a "hardest hitting dog" event, "driviest puppy" event, weight pull and bull breed conformation show. 15 dogs competed in the open protection.

The handler corrects the Mal at one point for not sitting on recall by smacking him on the hips. The first video showed her smacking the dog with the leash. Obviously not purely positive training. And I'd like to know which organization or whatever allows a handler to correct a dog by hitting during a trial and allows a dog to compete on leash. It looks like a bunch of people who have formed their own group and are doing their own thing. Possibly mixng some PSA, Ring and whatever they can come up with. I still question the safety of the training and the knowledge of the group.

comment from another board "I went to check out the battle of the bulls 2010 this weekend. It was very cool and there is obviously alot of work put into training the dogs. The poor decoy took a pretty good beating! One dog (shepard looking breed with bigger ears) hit him and took his whole upper half of his protective suit off. He had blood dripping pretty heavy from a wound on his hand. After patching him up the next dog (big OEB) missed on the initial lunge but as he chased him down the decoy slipped and the dog got him in the back of the head."

There is no obedience listed at all that I could find for this competition and the Cane Corso in the video I posted does not have even anything close to a reliable recall. The woman handler in that video has problems even holding the dog on leash. Why is the guy holding the clipboard, I'm assuming the judge, taking the leash from the handler and wrapping it around his hand? And then he loses his grip and the dog takes off into the blind. Maybe it should be noted that this Cane Corso did not fail, it placed in the competition in the middle of the pack.

Accident waiting to happen for sure!

Whateva, you people need to stop by the local carnival or fair to TRY and get a goldfish. No wonder people just buy the best dogs and do nothing with them. It's well worth it.

Edit: Thanks again, we love her !!!

After looking at several videos of Mali and the girl from the OP, I must say I think she has a pretty good idea of what she is doing with her dog....She obviously KNOWS what she is doing.....The Mali is trained in 3 different languages and hand signals....I am not saying that makes a good or great dog, but it does take alot of time and effort, and an intelligent dog to start with....I am sure there are dogs that can't even comprehend one language much less 3 and hand signals.......She may never get a Sch title on her Gage, but I bet she feels protected by him and has no fear when he is around....Wonder who would be the fool to dare attempt to do her harm?   JMO

I just finished watching the obedience video. It is a nice job. The girl has put a lot of work into it and she should be proud of that performance from her dog and her accomplishment.

From a competition OB standpoint, it's good but not great The dog isn't attentive enough like the judges want nowadays but the biggest thing I saw was the dog creeping a litte. A little slow sometimes and slightly out of position too. I think I may have seen the dog anticipating the command once or twice but that's not a huge deal to me.

For myself, I'd be pretty satisfied with this from my dog. The only thing I would really work to improve would be the "happy" level in the dog. That could be better than what it is IMHO. Maybe I'd work on the creeping. Still, very nice.

nonacona60, seriously ... that dog(s) KNOW what SHE is doing. This is a friggin' dog forum isn't it ? Why do I always feel so stupid reading these threads ?

by mobjack on 22 August 2010 - 06:08

Nona,
I won't disagree that the girl knows what she's doing with obedience. Do I think she could improve, yes but we all could. It doesn't necessarily take an intelligent dog to train it to that level. It does take a lot of time and perseverence.
I would like to see this girl work with a good KNPV trainer. I'd bet she could go very far. Her obedience is good but there is nothing I've seen with the protection work in any of the videos that impresses me in the slightest.

Have a clue as to what?   Thats how it is on the street, nothing is rehearsed, planned or known. There is no set way for anything to happen......Thats is difference in training your dog in actual Street personal protection and Schutzhund......Both have advantages for different people......

I would hardly say this girl abuses her dog by the incident in that video...Thats kinda quick to judge.....As for the dog being ruined, that dog is far from being ruined......What constitutes ruined....Please explain.....That dog recovered from the correction with no problem.....He didn't breakdown at all and showed no signs of be submissive after being corrected. The correction did not stop him from continuing his work.... This dog getting his enjoyment from biting is a great reward for the dog.."Do right and you get a bite"...Isn't that the idea when training?............Feather, just asking, do you own a Mali that is a good working dog?  If so, please show us a video so we can see what a good working Mali really is since you claim this one is ruined and sucks.....
