I don't know how dogs do it but I've always known which direction home was so I'm thinking they do too. You could dump me in the middle of nowhere and ask me to point to home and I could. I might not know which direction is which, east vs north etc. but I could get home. I'll bet I'm not the only one either. I'm thinking anyone of you could, if you just forget about directions, streets, obstacles etc. and think of where home is, you would unconciously know which way to head. Or maybe I'm just strange. LOL

Debi- Sense of directions differs from one to the other. Yours is good mine is very bad. I think that the same sense differs from one dog to the other, however in dogs like other senses, it is much more improved & advanced than human beings.
Yesterday and as a matter of curiosity, I made an experiment on our Labrador Misho I took him to a near by big park that he visited for the first time & I left him with the guard / keeper at the park's gate & I hid myself at an area which is located at approximately 5minutes walk from the main gate where I left Misho, after I had asked the guard / keeper to release him 10 minutes later. The dog found me just within 2 minutes later after he had been released.
I tried the same trick with my 3 years GSD & he found me 10 minutes later.
So I think Labradores in General & / or may be Misho particularly has a very very good sense of direction.
