SitasMom,
I will be looking for Amherst hens but it's the wrong time of year to find adult breeders, the number I originally called was for Golden pheasant (red gold) but he had already sold them all before I found him.
I had Both breeds before along with (Yellow) Goldens, Silver pheasant, Reeves, Elliott and a single Swinhoe's cock who was too old to breed.
3 kinds of Turkey, Blue India Peafowl, 5 different types of heavy breed chickens and several types of pigeons.
Had no bugs in the yard, but didn't have any grass either. When the feed mill burnt about ten years ago I sold everything.
I really enjoy watching the wild birds and do feed them, but this will be easier to enjoy.
The wild birds and the flying squirrels eat me out of house and home so I've cut back on the wild bird food.
I've always been a bird nut...lol
Maggiemae,
My Cockateal whistles the theme song from the Andy Griffith show.
P.S.
I forgot to mention the guy has a Red Tail hawk, I was impressed.
He has begun working towards his falconers License and has already hunted with this young bird.

--------------
Moons, l also had a Cockatiel and he, too, whistled the A.G. Theme Song. He would whistle anything that he would hear me whistle. I discovered this when he started doing the whistle that I used for calling my small dogs. So, I would just start whistling a song -- which was really pathetic and very "off-tune" -- and he would do it EXACTLY the same, including being very "off tune." If he would make a mistake and miss a note, he would stop and make a "clacking sound" and start over at the beginning. He would practice a song until he got it just right. He could also say a few words.

My husband grew up raising peacocks, pheasants, quail, doves etc...
Now the most exotic bird we have is a green cheek conure. We used to really want a Cockatoo, that was until we met CRHuertas infamous Barney! We do also have 2 Orpington chickens, between the 2 of them they lay 10 to 14 eggs a week. It's great, we have fresh organic eggs in our back yard. Just had a few for breakfast, yum!

My brother's cockatiel periodically shouts NATIONAL PUBLIC RADIO!
I prefer chickens. I have 8 of them. I always lose at least one when I get a rescue dog and then have to get new ones. Sigh. But they are pretty cool. I never expected to like them, but my first ones were, of course, rescues that someone had abandoned. Now my parents and friends are spoiled rotten and constantly begging for eggs. I don't eat many, but my dogs do!
Two of last year's babies:

gorgeous birds! the only bird i've ever had was a budgie with no feet. i had to take the perch out of the cage and i had to change the paper constantly! but he was cute and he liked "dancing" (hopping on his stumps) to Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks. i want chickens, but we're not zoned for them and my mean husband says NO. maybe when he retires and we move somewhere less "suburbia".
maybe this is a dumb question, but what do you do with them? eggs, meat? just pretty to have around?
