Anyone have any summer training pics they want to share? maybe some nice warm training pics would help the winter pass quicker?

This is my favorite pic of my Axel photos.

I think we all live in the same neighborhood.  I have dogs loose on each side of me - it doesn't matter what way I walk my dog.   I have found that it encourages my male to fire up when he see's all dogs.  On the field or walking down the road.  I try really hard to keep him dog nutrual but I see a pattern developing because of these dogs charging him everytime we walk down the street.

One neighbor in particular comes running out when he hears his dogs charging us - he chases them down - but the damage is done.  I too don't want to have to call animal control on my neighbor - he is the only one that I half way get along with on my street.  But it has occured to me to use this on those yappy little dogs....used it on my last husband and he doesn't bother me anymore....lol

Two Moons

Most communities have leash laws, make a formal complaint.

I would avoid the cattle Prod.

I have a similar problem at the park I sometimes use for workouts, but these are not Pit Bulls, and we have no leash laws this far out in the county.
I control my dog first and foremost.
I never turn my back on a loose dog, I do have my dog sit and we stare down the dog watching for sign.
You must read the other dogs behavior before you act.
Sometimes we will advance towards the other dog slowly and stop again.
Sometimes we will wait it out.
Sometimes we just go about our business and ignore the dog.
It all depends on the other dogs tells.

I do have a rather large staff, and I'm usually armed, but if I had my druthers I'd rather have a nice pepper spray encase the other dog became aggressive.

Most people carry cell phones these days, if your cornered by aggressive dogs especially Pit Bulls, call the police and keep things as calm as you can, keep your own animal under control.

Strange dogs approaching you are just another distraction that you must train your dog to ignore.

And a Pit Bull by it's very nature is not to be taken lightly,
I would not do a stare down with a Pit Bull, try the sit facing off to the side while still keeping an eye on the dog.

Anytime a strange dog is showing signs of real aggression I would use that cell phone rather than have a fight.
I'm not above shooting one myself if the situation called for it but thats just me in my particular situation and location.

Two Moons

I have dogs running loose,
and my neighbors have on occasion come walking down this private road with dogs and cats in tow.

I have taken the trouble to over see introductions and so far have not had a problem, except the cat.

We couldn't get the cat out of the tree so I cut the tree down...lol
After putting the dogs away of course.

All the dogs here know each other and get along for the most part, but walking a dog past someone Else's territory is always cause for excitement.

I don't walk mine past their houses and wished they would not walk theirs past mine.
Nothing I can do about that, except I do correct my dogs for going into the road when I am witness to the act.

Living in a town or city and walking your dog must be very uncomfortable at times knowing that dogs are running loose.

I don't think any answer is a one size fits all situation truth.

Use some common sense and maybe find safe areas to walk.

You all need to be careful with neighbor dogs, call the authorities;  if you do not go through the right channels and something happens to their loose dogs, now you are going to be responsible, whether you did it to the dogs or not;  they can also come and poison  your dogs. etc.

I have a dog aggressive male also (shepherd) and I tell people out-right, HE does not like other dogs or kids;  please stay away.  It seems to scare people/dogs away.  Yeh.  However, there are some people who do not give a rats a--;  those are the people to watch for.

Nans,
You make a good point and one I consider always.
There are people who would cause harm to your animals.

Its not easy to get along with some people.

I think thats why I live this far out in the first place.

Lav,

We have not hardly had any snow this winter.  What we had melted off more than a month ago...been having forties every day and sunny the last week..Got some garden work done.

That said, it is snowing today!  So far just about a half inch...Nothing to get excited about, but nonetheless, a white sprinkle.  I'm not worried.

I'll post some new pics of Oakley, taken just after our walk and while we were working out in the yard...Hubby playing with Oakley and a bone...
