If you want to reproduce a little calmer dog find you a clear headed east german ddr dog

by Gustav on 06 January 2010 - 15:01

I have imported dogs from Czech Republic in past 10 years because many of the Czech imports that i work with in Law Enforcement remind me of the dogs we had thirty years ago in military, LE, and and private ownership. Understand your position Hans, in terms of what you and Jiri are doing. I feel the same way about preserving the dog that was very useful in early seventies that has changed so much today. For me I use all types,Czech, West Working, and DDR dogs to maintain the breeding of dogs that I have found to be successful in the service to man. I don't breed Czech dogs but rather dogs with Czech lines, DDR lines, and West workinglines, of the German Shepherd.

I want to revive this topics as i think there are a lot of things left to learn about the czech lines. especially the PS lines.

What is it that is seperating this line from all others? mentally and physically.
How do they surpass other lines in working ability?
How are they preserving these lines from dilution?
What are we to exspect in the future from this line?
What type of people should be looking for these lines?

As i think there are many false stereotypes about these dogs out there.

I think Hans is our resident expert on this particular venue of lines but i wanted to open it up.

As many have already seen my post I have a ddr czech cross pup and is florished with PS dogs on his mothers side. I would love to know more about the dogs in his pedigree if anyone has seen them work. As I choose him off of my evaluation of him not his lines. Now the more I dig/research/keep ears open the more intrigued I get/am.

I have 2 Czech mixed females that I think are fantastic. They both have sweet temperaments, great working drive, strong nerves and are two of the most balanced GSDs I have ever seen. Both are small and weigh only 55 lbs.  But they are great dogs in small packages.

You can look up their pedigrees.

Nadia Von Gluckhaus.  She looks like that Czech wolf that was bred into the GSDs there.  Here is a link that shows the types from all over the world:

 To Yoshi
Part of the PM to him.

This is all long story. I'll try to make is short. The reason I started to import CZ dogs to US was because I love the breed and wanted the Americans to experience these exceptional dogs during the era when  the GSD here in US were atrocious. The popularity of the z Ps type dogs now , I believe, is so high because, they are the epitome of a working dog as it was intended by Max v Stephanitz.
Why is that?
They are and were true "working" working GSDs. It was necessary for these dogs to actually to work and were bred by people who actually worked them. There are not many of such dogs these days ,... I mean dogs who truly work every day, except police, some herding and S&R and such. The rest are wannabees who are subject to fads, wishful thinking, and other warped ideas. The old Czech dogs and mainly z Ps dogs were actually working dogs and were bred that way by Czech border patrol under supervision of Karel Hartl and Jiri Novotny, and I then Imported them into USA.
How many police dept you know who breed successfully their own dogs like the Czech PS (Border patrol) have  had done for decades. I do not know any. That is where the value is. Just like the Arabian horse is a standard so are these GSDs standard to the GSD.
That is what then led to improvement of the working GSD lines in USA . That is because there was something to look up to. People could say:"Oh that is what I want." I do not know much about breeding horses, but I know that performance of some lines are improved by let say Arabian hoses. And if I may, I would   compare it to sport cars...everybody (sport cars )  wants to and compares itself to Ferrari. They say and make movies about it: " I have beaten Ferrari." "This is the first US car which have beaten Ferrari". "It is almost as good looking as Ferrari." You got my point.

I´m not sure if the czech dogs are better than dogs you can find elsewhere that also have been breed for "real work". In sweden for example there was also a breedingprogram by the army that breed GSDs for utility since the 40s to mid 90s, as you can see in the lines of the father of this bitch,

Is the hips and elbows a problem in the czech dogs, pretty much HD-faults when I looked at the statistics from a kennel that breed with czech lines?

I have heard of Swedish HD program when the dogs were xrayed several times and last time at 5 years. That is what I have herd. I do not know if it is the truth.
I really do not know much about Swedish dogs. However  it is exiting to hear that there are some other outfits who consistently produce working GSD  based on their own experience and needs of obedience protection and scent work. Is there more info which you can provide?
Prager Hans

P.S. please reformulate this sentence. I do not understand it in this form:

"Is the hips and elbows a problem in the Czech dogs, pretty much HD-faults when I looked at the statistics from a kennel that breed with czech lines?"

by jennie on 08 January 2010 - 23:01

Can provide some info later, it´s getting late here now. The question regarding HD/ED is due to the statistics I´ve seen from a swedish kennel breeding with czech lines, most swedish dogs are x-rayed in large numbers and there is pretty much info about how different kennels and dogs have produced regarding HD/ED.
