Two Moons

Its not about you or your post newGSDlover, its about the breed and standards and the future.
There are probably many (top dogs) that have been bred who maybe should not.
Thats my personal opinion.
I think if you keep looking you will find what you are looking for.

And I sort of agree with some about what if any difference a color makes.
But its not that simple, other things are overlooked in the process, important things if one want's better dogs.

Its a hot topic for sure.

There is only two way to go, the right way or the wrong way there is no such thing like middle. If the dog has issues it should not be used in breeding, period, fixing a pup at an early age is not a solution either, you can't realy enforce your contract as people will do still what they want. Do I think life should be taken away from a living thing for its foult hell no. But I stand strong on the argument that it should not be used to breed future generation. So unless you find me a way to preven this I stand where I stand which is PTS.

I know that if I was possible I would let every breeder send me those pups raise and train them until they were sexually mature enough to be fixed and do it and then I would adopt them out. I love the breed and enjoy training them everyday. I just hate to see them pts for being a little different. I do believe that if they have severe health problems then it creates an issue but if they are healthy then let them be companions or workers.

There IS the color GRAY, and in this case it is called Liver or Blue. You just don't want to see it, what you are talking about is relinquishing control, be it DNA or whatever. Death, really, is not the solution, be it people or puppies. Someone might just decide you are beginning to look a bit gray yourself, one day, and how happy would you be with your solution then?

In the end, we are all different.
Its up to the individual to decide whats right or wrong for them.
Just remember its not all fun and games , wine and roses for some animals.
And its not something you should take lightly.
Too many suffer already.
Sometimes what you think you know is only a fantasy, reality looks much different.

Oh well no ones gonna win this debate I'm sure of that.

I love the liver color.  I really like the color of their eyes.   In my view, it's time to change the breed standard, rather than cull the puppies on the basis of color.  If I could find a nice liver - I'd likely buy one.  I'm not planning on entering any show ring, so color to me, is personal taste - temperament and health are everything.

newGSDlover:  There is a kennel in the USA (K9 Pines) that breeds and sells liver German Shepherd dogs.  I don't kbnow what kind of health tests they do, though.  They are obviously not of the mindset that these dogs are in any way inferior, just because of color.  I am of the same mindset - the only caveat I would put on that is that, regardless of color, I would want to see good hip scores, etc.

Hi Luvdemdogs , i agree with you whole heartedly , not sure what country you are in but if you are in the UK there is a fantastic bitch (liver) that has recently arrived from Belguim and has a fantastic hip/elbow score too. I am putting my name down for a pup next year , she is from fabulous lines.

Ema. What are these fabulous lines you speak of ?.

by petowner on 24 November 2009 - 12:11

Ema.  Why have you not answered my question ?.
