Wrongo 'o' Blackthorno, the "a" and "b" designations were used years ago to gauge temperament.  Maybe one should learn about the breed for which they preach.

NOWADAYS, the "a" designation behind the KKl means a-stamp hips.  And it has been this way for many many years.  In 20 years of being in the sport/breed I've never heard of "b" and etc being a temperament designation - so it's not been such for at least that long.

If you look at this example, you will see Koer ratings in a separate column from the hip ratings.  Note several of them have Kkl1b or Kkl2b with HD-A ratings.

Maybe Phil is confusing breeds. There certainly was never an "a" or "b" designation behind the breed survey class to indicate temperament issues in West Germany with the SV. The "a" always stood for the hip certification, as an "a zuerkannt". The reason behind that is that many years ago, dogs were breed surveyed without hip ratings in the late 60s and 70s. The "a" identified the dogs which had hip ratings, as it was voluntarily. Later, when it became a mandatory requirement to have that certification done, the "a" could have been dropped (since all dog breed surveyed had to have that hip certification) but this term had manifested itself and it stayed.

I don't believe the idea of letter rankings of breed surveys applies to GSDs. I have titled and Koered a few dogs (not as many as Molly!) and I've been a USA Breed Warden (albeit, that doesn't have many prereqs) for about 10 years. Never heard of the "a" standing for anything other than a hip rating in GSDs.
