If a dog is in a long down, rocks onto a hip and relaxes while it waits for you, is this less desirable than a dog who crouches down staring intently at you? What if they both get up with equal enthusiasm?
I, for one, have always preferred the FORMER. I actively DISCOURAGE the latter.
One of my favorite dogs of all time would fall asleep and snore during the long down out of sight in AKC open. I'd come back and he's be snoring between two leery eyed dogs (once a rottie and a dobie). I LOVED THAT DOGS' CONFIDENCE.

I wouldn't want or allow a dog to go to sleep on a long down in an obdience exercise. Although, my dogs are high in drive during OB and tranquiIizers couldn't make them go to sleep during OB. I want my dog to be ready to go and continue working. I don't do any AKC obedience, maybe it's ok with the AKC people for their dogs to fall asleep during OB (I'd probably fall asleep too). Definately, not ok for my SchH dog or my police dog.
Actually, I encourage attentive sits and downs out of motion as well as an attentive long down.

I agree that AKC obedience is less fun than schutzhund OB. The rythm is slower but there are some really good dog there..Some would pass OB schutzhund without a problem..
I will never aloud my dog to sleep on a long down..rest their head and be relax ok but never close their eyes..they need to still be alert for something else to happen..
I agree that I prefer a dog that is not to febrile on long downs..I like them to be relax a little when I tell them to stay. Relax but still alert..Those are the ones I like..

I must say I have several friends that do AKC obedience and their dogs are awesome. However, they also do SchH and Herding with the same dogs. I'm sure there are many great dogs of all breeds do a variety of AKC activities. I am not one to do AKC OB, maybe agility.

interpretation.
and so begins the neverending debate
what is drive?
what is aggression?
what is a real dog?
what makes up working ability?
everyone has their own ideas and interpretations of all of these terms. that why we have so many "types" of gsd's and not just one.
carry on and have fun with it.
