lonewolf, good job!
Funny in a sad way how many of us individuals here donate for trophies and try to support various organizations. Then the big name kennels do not. Ah well, we do what we can.

Tina,
And THAT was the point of several of the posts. They, the big name kennels, give scarce support in terms of trophies to one of their "Main Events."
But, to be fair, how often do we see any of the "top competitors" sponsoring any trophies at the performance events? Carlos Rojas has sponsored trophies in recent years, as has James Honda. But, where are the "Big Boys" who have stood on podiums, teams and given seminars for years? Like the big name kennels, they are entering to take home some of the hardware, too. And, like the kennels, they rarely support by sponsoring a trophy or two...or having the dogs' owners do so.
It's the same thing to me.

It WOULD seem that more trophies would be sponsored by the folks who typically take them home. Some of the big kennels DO send support, but sadly, not enough, even though they rake in huge sales from having placed highly in the events.
I'm pretty sure I could live very comfortably on what some of the kennels that place those full-page ads in Dog World, Dog Fancy, Puppies USA, & Dogs USA spend on advertising alone.
Always interesting to note which kennels' sponsorships are conspicuous ...by their absence.
I wish I could afford to donate some cash, but all I can do right now is volunteer assistance.
The good news is that I can operate a poop scoop with the best of 'em. Ha ha ha.

I thought my dogs sponsoring a trophy at one of the upcoming National Championships was a nice touch.
Good of them to show their support to other dogs that worked so hard to get there.

Hey guys,
Don't be so hard on Baldursmom. She has been working her butt off organizing this show. I think that she more than agrees with you about the lack of enthusiasm with the trophy sponsorship. She knows this better than anyone because she is the one making the phone calls trying to get support. Her remark is only because she happens to be affiliated with a group that has put up as much money as any group and it is one of the big kennels, like them or not. I think that what she was trying to say is that it isn't all of them.
The other thing I will say about some of the kennels mentioned is that they have sent money for the WDA Nationals the following week.

God, what a rotten day I am having when I defend showline kennels????
WTF !!!
Char,
Just be glad that the whole thing will be over in three weeks!!!

I don't see anyone being hard on Baldursmom. I do see that "the Majors" have been taken to task for their paltry trophy support...in both camps.
I admit to being impressed, though, by the fact that a couple show kennels/clubs have sponsored trophies for the WDA Championship. It will be interesting to see if the same entities do the same for the USA Nationals, as we are having all this "rapprochement" and all. :-)

OGBS-
Thank you for the kind words!
I see these large kennels as what they are, businesses, they have budgets and invest where they beleive the ad dollars are going to get them more business and POSITIVE publicity. Their budgets allow so much for vet care, dog food, labor, show fees, registration fees training fees, gas and trophy contributions as well as paying themselves to afford the lifestyle commensurate to the work they do and the preception to the buyers. I am sure they are seeing a reduction in puppy sales, increases to their overhead and a lack of training ops for outside dogs. They have to make cuts where they can.
In addition, if they sponsor all those trophies, then they have to deal with the comments on how they bought their own trophy! We don't give them a fair shake. They are damned if they do and damned if they don't. So are the great working dog people.
Am I disapointed that I don't see the larger kennels making donations to the trophies? I would be lying if I said no. It too makes me sad to see, as it would be nice to have all of the trophies sponsored. It has also opened my eyes though to the lack of support we all have for each other. We definatly do not support one another at all. I made it a point to add to the WUSV fund with my membership update. My home phone may be turned off for nonpayment, but I sponsored a Sieger Show trophy on my own and as part of a group and put a little to the working dogs.
We should all put our money where our mouths are and commit to sponsoring trophies for our ALL local clubs, shows and trials instead of complaining about what the other guy is doing. It does no good. Be an example and leader of good sportsmanship and hope others will follow.

Been there, done that. Overcame the naiveté.

Seems to me that many are confusing the idea of "successful" breeders with the concept of "big" breeders (as in "big guys, big breeders, big money, the majors, etc." How about some definition of terms? What criteria are necessary to earn the label "big guy," "big breeder" or "big money"? Placements"? Consistency? What defines a breeder as a "smaller" or "hobby" breeder? Litters per year? Net income? Net loss? Participation in shows? Placements? What constitutes "giving back" to the breed? Who among us has all-seeing knowledge of any individual's GSD philanthropy and service world-wide?
Something to consider: "Klein und fein." The rhyme doesn't translate, but the sense is "small and successful".
The pejorative, pre-conceived paradigms presented by some thread participants smack of petty prejudices and the big "J".

A lot of noise, signifying nothing. :-)
