To screen for TVS the vet palpates the spine, OFA hip. and lateral back views. My ortho guy is so good he can give me about 90% just by feeling for it.
To determine the amount of nerve impingment you have to do something called a myleogram (sp?)

Poor front or rear drive (lacking balance), roach back, poor feet and weak pastern, dragging feet, steep croup, poor back..and male that looks like female!
Of course Health and temperament are top priorities..but the post said we were not counting that..

the male that looks like a female, are we talking about american lines? yes that is a problem, very little differences in the sexes. almost a collie head on some. But I am seeing improvement in certain regions on the country, probably due to the use of certain studs. in the german lines we have bitches who are starting to look male. size, head, bone, they are not feminine. not all, but too many. I want a male to look like a male and my bitches to look like bitches. a doggy bitch does have her attributes if bred to the proper male, but in general I don't care for them.
german lines, I am seeing rear toes being dragged during a normal walk. not attractive JMO. croups are still steep, but hopefully with males like Zamp we will see this improve.

Yes I do agree that bitchy males are more prevalent in Am. Breeding..but it is improving. There is some very handsome an masculine male in the show ring..but you have to do your research..
Much more masculine however in german line..but sometimes you have those ugly head (rottie like)..I JUST HATE IT!!

The over angulated back legs. It is becoming an epidemic in the showlines and starting also in the workinglines.
I also agree with Uberland about the workingline folk concentrating too much on prey drive and the dogs are becoming only good for sport.

I think that -- like GARD said -- back issues are one of the biggest problems facing the GSD today -- because very few people are looking for them.
I know the WSGP is hitting pretty hard on the back issues right now because the results can be so terrible with the dogs.
