>  I understand your point and I am familiar with the case you mentioned as well as many others. Fortunatly I see much more positive in the K-9 world than the negitive you have described. Again it is unfortunate that there are those who resort to the methods described.

Start this out with "I am not trying to insult, personalize, point fingers, talk bad about anyone",

Regardless of "Master" trainer designation, I have seen K9 trainer friends (i.e. Police. SAR, etc) dismissed or not thought of as "real" trainers because they don't "title" their dogs, yet the dogs are very successful at what they do. I have seen Trial trainer friends (i.e. Schutzhund, French Ring, etc) treated the same way because their dogs aren't "working" (i.e. job) but have earned numerous titles. The two methods (for want of a better word) have different objectives and therefore different mindsets (I have dogs in both), this in no way diminishes the value of either because both methods want dogs to reach their full potential as working dogs (as compared to show or pet dogs). If a trainer can successfully train a dog in either method to excell, then their work speaks for itself.

Now I do believe there should be a Master Trainer designation for those trainers that can successfully train the dog's handler.

I know there are many good law enforcement k9 trainers out there and I respect the ones who are.

Hey Bob, I totally agree with you about the NC State Trooper who hung the dog off the railing.  That was horrific and indeed terrible training.  The NC State Police have now disbanded their K9 program and are going to use strictly single purpose drug dogs.  It is going to be a big loss to those guys on patrol that now have no patrol K9's to back them up.   I have seen some Schutzhund trainers do some brutal things to dogs as well (IMO), but I have seen many more doing great things with their dogs.

Dog training has come a long way in the past ten years or so and unfortunately some trainers in both Police K9 and SchH have not kept up with the times.  The great trainers have evolved and adapted, some are still back in the stone ages.  I know I am constantly trying to find more effective ways to train my dogs and am trying not to repeat some of the mistakes I have made in the past.  I know several PD K9 trainers and they have been evolving their training methods as well in the past few years.  I appreciate their experience and have learned quite a bit from them.  Some I would use in my training and some I won't.  I have been involved in SchH for years and do decoy work, I am a K9 handler and decoy for Police dogs and it is completely different.  I'll push a Police K9 into serious defense faster than I would a SchH dog.  The K9 needs to be able to really fight and bring it, if it can't it is a serious liability and dangerous for the handler.  My experiences with K9 trainers in my area has been excellent, but I am not naive enough to think that every trainer is good.  I just try not to generalize and make my own decisions based on what I see.  I love dogs and working with them and I respect anyone who has a great relationship with their dog and does something with their dogs.  I don't care if its AKC OB, agility, SchH, SAR, flyball, therapy, whatever floats your boat.

Good luck with that promising female and Happy Holidays.

If anyone can be called a Master trainer it is my helper Rrnus  B

Not only is he a wizard with training Dogs, He can do the same for people and that is very important,

His demand for his services all over the world says that,  just come back from work engagements of Malaysia and New Zealand only a day before Christmas

He himself would never say it,  a very quiet laid back man ,who just does the job he loves helping others and there Dogs to become b

I hopw some of it rubs off on me

Hey does anyone know if Phil Hoelcher and/or T-Floyd still do seminars and if so, do they have any planned for 2009?

Teri
