This post reminds me of when i was a Lad and possibly Miss beeb and Liz will bear me out

Us Guys like to use Brylcream on our hair, a kind of Seting Cream to keep the Quifs in place.

That was the age of the Teddy Boys and i was one one them, with big side burns. a big Quif at the front, and drain pipe trousers

Then came the Hells Angels again we had  the same Hair Cut ,But Motor Bikes,  to see off the Mods on there puny little scooters, raised hell with them we did

They were the Days

makes me feel young again

Why on earth is the Dog having Oil put on its coat, sounds a bit Slick to me

I think Petco needs to re train their employees, lol.  Your dog will be ok if you give it another bath.  No problem there.  Try adding stuff to the food, not the coat : - }

Washing up liquid will be fine if rinsed out properly..... use an oatmeal shampoo after the final rinse to sooth the skin.

To improve the shine on his coat feed a top quality food IE orijen/timberwolf etc.

Add a whole raw egg once a week

Salmon oil is super.

Groom more regularly.  I have recently bought an ionic brush for dogs that is great and really makes them shine.

I cheat and use setil spray I think the brand name is re-quall... or bio-grooms mink oil.

and don't listen to retards in pet shops LMFAO this reminds me of when i was a kid and i covered out JRT in mayo....he was very popular with the other dogs until they licked the last bit out of his coat .....

Never in 60 years of keeping Dogs have i heard, put this oil on its coat. HEALTH does not come from putting oil on a dogs coat to make it shine

The feeding as i and others have said brings out the shine in a dogs coat if it is healthy and well in itself then its coat will have a natural shine,

As is said a little Salmon oil on the morning food and a Vitamin E capsule will bring on a natural well being in the Dog, BUT do not over feed, that will not make the dog healthy at all

Never take notice of Pet Stores, most  working there do not even own a Dog ,let alone know the A -  -   from the front of one

If the dog is getting proper nutrition just as Steve1 says the shine comes naturally and from within, not by putting something on the coat. Dogs who are properly fed and healthy neither need brushing daily, frequent baths, vitamins or other supplements, spritzing on of something topical or whatever. If someone wants to do all this, that is fine. I have many, many dogs here and their coats are all glossy and look great, with two exceptions. Those two have an enzyme deficiency so they do get supplements and their coats look fine too.

Don't feel bad . I know someone ( who is now a very successful competition trainer)  who made the same mistake with her Chesapeake Bay retriever. She was trying to make her look good for a photo and was told to use bacon grease.  Of course it was supposed to go in the food, but she  rubbed her down with a batch of drippings and then wondered why she was so sticky!

The oil won't hurt your dog at all, but it will collect dust and dirt and get kind of nasty. Dawn dish soap works great for bathing ( dilute it with water) and then rinse thoroughly. And dry thoroughly too before putting the dog outside n the cold. If you can't manage the bath at home, take him to a groomer who will do it for you and he'll look better than new. If his coat is dull, it could be dirty. Brush frequently.

If he is indoors a lt and the heater is on, it can dry his skin and coat. Make sure he gets plenty of outdoor exercise and keep the heat down ..

Or, it could be the food he is eating. Grains are common allergens for dogs and some just don't  get good nutrition from food with grain ( especially corn) in them.  Just like us, when we aren't healthy on the inside, our skin and hair shows it on the outside.

Good luck, and don't feel dumb because you aren't the first to make that mistake. And besides, we *do* give hot oil treatments to hair and coats sometimes!
