I'm surprised that a certain person hasn't put her 2 cents in, lol. She said before that her dog lifted his leg since the day he could walk, LOL. I find that very hard to believe

One of my males didn't lift until he was FIVE, simply because its a respect issue when raising dogs in a pack. Raising the leg is 'marking territory' and a sign of approaching maturity, squatting like a girl is well, just that, squatting like an underdog. He was being raised by and with his dad, who ruled the pack with great tolerance and wisdom. HOWEVER, he (the son) did breed without trouble, so it has nothing to do with the male being a good or bad breeder as someone above pointed out. Though he was certainly not the alpha.
The squatting I see him and the another male do both especially when its not a real tree or bush it seems, they don't bother. I guess it has to be worthy the marking .

My friend's boy, Shade, starting lifting his leg when he was around 9 or 10 months old. I knew one male that never once lifted his leg to pee his entire life.. So I'd say it depends on the individual dog

It depends on the dog. My current intact male first lifted his leg when he was around 10 months. He wanted to overmark another dog's spot and I guess he just figured it out. He only does this when we are out of his yard. In his own yard, he still semi-squats.
Nobody's mentioned which leg their dog lifts. My dog nearly always lifts his left leg. I've watched him maneuver into position to lift his left leg when it would be much easier to lift the right one.

Yah, you're right. Chaos usually lifts his left leg too. I can't remember if I've ever seen him lift the other though.

Old Nelson is a leftie also... I wonder if there's such a thing as right/left handedness (or in this case leggedness) in dogs?
