One of the greatest thing's I have alway's admired about a German Shepherd is that if you have made it a real member of your family, and it truely feel's part of your pack, it will protect you in a crisis.
It may not lay down it's life for you but that's not what I would ask anyway. Even a fat couch potatoe will protect something it love's. The loyalty and protective instinct's that even the most docile gsd carry in their genetic's are what make's it my favorite.
Yes you can have a hard hitting well trained dog but I expect my dog's to do what they do best on their own, out of love and loyalty for their home and master and all the little indian's that live there.
Training is important, no required, for so many reason's. And you can easily build a dog's confidence with training.
But I agree a dog is born with certain abilities that cannot be over looked.
And if cinga does not come back to explain what he really want's to know then why bother.
We all have different needs and requirement's in a dog.

Cinga,
I understand what you are talking about. I am currently working with a dog that needs adjusting, different perspective on how he views people or threats. There is a fine line in sharpening him up a bit while remaining social, but it should not be a huge mountain to climb. Some times it is just a matter of showing the dog some types of stimuli he has not experienced. It is not a matter of putting something into him that is not there, as much as bringing out something that is hidden away. I will send you a P.M.
