Brady Bee

What is more worrying though is when a non breed specific judge still puts up the duds!

hi funky munky (liz)

imo it is the KC to blame for the state of our breed when you judge at a show the rules are that you judge the best on the day it does not matter if the dog is hip/elbow scored heamophiliac epileptic craven coward or any other trait you care to mention if on the day this dog/bitch performs the best then it should be given the ticket that is the KC rules so yes they are to blame because they allow such dogs to gain tickets and so influence our breed  just my opinion

JIM H, You are correct of course, and i agrree the kc have a lot to answer for,but i still say they are not alone.Ican always remember standing at the ringside, with well known gsds people, watching a male class. The dog at the front was a super young dog,i had always admired it,but we all knew the dog had a terrible hipscore. We were discussing this at the ring side when one of the party said "you can only judge what you see".Now that has stuck with me all these years, and i say if a judge knows facts about a dog it should not be promoted as the "best" on any day.Of course judging true to your believes and for the gsd may not get you any brownie points but at least you can hold your head up.Please believe me i am no fan of the kc,but i still do not lay all the blame on them, thier "rules"have been needing looked at for years, but this is no exuse for a lot of breeders exploiting the kc's weaknesses. Just my opinion,  liz

Just imagine IF the Kennel Club decided that ONLY dogs with acceptable health screening test results could be placed 1st in a KC Show, or be awarded a CC or RCC or BOB.

Better still, ONLY dogs with acceptable health screening test results could be entered in a KC Show.

That would'nt be a bad start!!!!

by beepy on 18 September 2008 - 11:09

Good idea.

Only puppies from screened parents could be entered, and then for those over say 18 months have to be screened and pass a set level say breed mean scores etc.

It would encourage the many show people who dont breed to undertake breed health screening and then the KC could hold their head up and say that only healthy dogs get awards.

Sheila Rankin (last week) said that the BC have previously asked the KC to refuse to award Championship status to dogs that have not been Surveyed... the KC refused.  However, Sheila added that she thought the time may be right to approach them with this request once again.

We may not all agree on everything but we're not too far from it are we?  I think it's very encouraging!

as gsd exhibiters/breeders we are but a litle fish in a huge pond i for one would like to see this passed where mp/p/ must be from tested parents before they can be entered and then for junior/yearling must them selves have scored hips/elbows and whatever other tests are applicable but would all the other breeds want the same for their breeds here in lies the stumbling block but if you dot ask you dont get.
