I have 3 small kids, and Remy is one of the most tolerant dogs we have ever had. I think most rescues are able to get an idea of what the dog was exposed to and try to make a good match. The only issue Remy had was that he was extremely underweight when we got him - he was picked up as a stray. Someone at some point had taught him some basic obedience because he heels beautifully and knew sit, down, stay, off and stand when he came home.
Georgia is also technically a rescue since she was a rehome from her breeder at the age of 2. Our foster son bit her on the tongue about two months ago, and she didn't do anything. Our foster son has multiple developmental issues and she just seems to know there is something special about him. She is appropriately alert to strangers and is doing beginning bitework, so I have no reservation about her drives, she just knows which kids need extra consideration. This, I think, comes from her breeding, and she is training to be a therapy dog.
If this person is a new dog owner and has small kids, why does he want a large breed known for protective instincts? I know you're just trying to help him out but this person sounds like his priorities are a little skewed. There's a person a few blocks away from me that has a life-size statue of a yellow lab in his yard with a dog house. He periodically moves the dog around so it looks like it might be real - maybe this guy needs one of those!

LOL.......
A pet rock !!
He's had GSD's, has a male now. Run's the country side and manage's to avoid trouble. He lost one to a car on the highway. Its country here and he just want's something to stay on the porch and run off the odd opossum or coon.
Bark at the mailman... or salesman.
He's not unlike several of my nieghbor's... You'd have to visit sometime to truely understand poh-dunk usa. The local's are sometime's called ridge runner's by the nieghboring community who my nieghbor's call flat head's.... LOL
I get a kick out of it sometime's. Not as bad as deliverence but still pretty back woodsie.

Black German Shepherds are really Belgians
Sable German Shepherds are really Malinois
White German Shepherds are really part wolf
So, if you want a REAL GERMAN SHEPHERD it HAS to be Black and Red... DUHHHH
Dontcha know NOTHIN???

Oh, I understand podunk, USA! Not too far outside of Anchorage, blue tarps are routinely used as roofing material, secured (of course) with duct tape. I used to do some homebased services for work, and there are a number of houses held together by duct tape and dogs that run loose.
We have a friend who has a small sled dog team - that's an entirely different world of dog ownership!!

A breeder told me that the reddish tone on tan may vary from time to time for a given dog. Mine has gotton more red around the neck and the lower parts of the legs, but she is still basically a black and tan.
